Origin of the word Parochial
Parochial is derived from the word parish, which is basically a local church community. The word parish in turn comes from Greek and actually means ‘living nearby’. How this meaning transformed into the one parish holds now is unclear, but we can clearly relate it with our word under consideration. Parochial carries the following dictionary definitions:
1. Of, relating to, supported by, or located in a parish.
2. Of or relating to parochial schools.
3. Narrowly restricted in scope or outlook; provincial

We can take the etymological source meaning of ‘living nearby’ symbolic of a provincial place, which generally have a restricted outlook. So that is how we come to the current meaning of parochial
