Recommendation 1 from ‘Foreign Policy’

Article Name:‘Why China expelled Al Jazeera’

By: ‘Isaac Stone Fish’

The article talks about the recent incident where Chinese government refused to renew the press credentials and visa of Al-Jazeera’s China correspondent Melissa Chan, who also had an excellent reputation as a journalist. This expulsion is supposed to be the first of its kind for a foreign journalist. Article states that this happened because China wanted to give warning to international journalists and that too without causing much of an international hullabaloo. Further, the journalists are not the only one who have been victims to the laws in China there have been many other incidents as well and pattern has been such that influential countries like America are less likely to protest due to the complications involved. The article further marks that it is just that anyone who does not follow China’s laws, they are given less leniency.

Summary:

Well, it seems to be a very mundane matter that a journalist has been expelled and consequently Al-Jazeera has been closed, as in why on earth would it make news? The answer is that journalists, reporting news from around the world should not come under scanner due to anything. Reporting news in today’s world is a requirement. And irrespective of news corporation and ethnicity world citizens should be allowed to consume news, as much as they want. And it is only possible when the working of the journalist’s is not hindered.

Recommendation 2 from ‘The Economic Times’

Article Name:‘Mark Zuckerberg’s stock grip over Facebook Inc becomes new normal in Silicon valley’

By: ‘Bloomberg’

Article states that the model on which Facebook has been built .i.e. it gives Mark Zuckerberg majority control over Facebook Inc. is being adopted by the founders of many companies, as entrepreneurs wish to hold sway trumps shareholder power. Companies like Groupon, Zynga, Zillow and LinkedIn have taken up this approach. Article states that this trend gained momentum in 2000 when Google created dual-class structure for its IPO giving 2/3rds of voting power to its founders.

Summary:

Perhaps much following for this trend comes from the fact that it gives a structure to their business and that too in financial terms, which given them power to formulate new plans and also execute them without any hindrance. This must be the only reason that founders want to have maximum control.

By: ‘Joshua Keating’

The article has stated that free Tibet motto has slowly faded in the background and mentioning various reasons for it. Article begins by mentioning the death of Yauch a musician who had a career with the Beastie Boys and also who was uniquely committed to the cause of free Tibet. Ater his death the cause as faded in prominence and over the years Americans too have started to forget the cause and the reasons for it could be as vast as China’s entertainment industry, which has a prize tag of $2milion, which makes it less likely for the film makers to support projects that are pro cause.

Summary:

Well, entertainment is a simple business, so yes there will be less and less hullabaloo. When we take into consideration 30 odd self-immolations in the most recent time, then this fact comes to the light. Further, Dalai Lama’s regression into his abode and less focus on political role may also be the cause for this, as pointed out by the article.
