Eave or eaves means the lower edge of a roof that overhangs the wall: “Hotels generally have eaves to protect the windows from the snowfall.”
Eve is typically used to refer to the night before a special day: “New year’s eve is a special night to celebrate.”
Eve can also refer to the period of time just before an important event: “The students were nervous on the eve of their results.”
It was on a cold winter’s eve, just a week before New Year’s Eve, when we thought we heard footsteps on the eaves of our house and we all went out to investigate.
