1. Hallow
• Honour as holy. To hallow is to bless, consecrate, or render holy by means of religious rites, especially significant religious places or the relics of saints.
Usage: Cathedrals might traditionally be viewed as hallowed places meant for sombre reflection and hushed reverence.
2. Impasse
• A bargaining impasse occurs when the two sides negotiating an agreement are unable to reach an agreement and become deadlocked.
Usage: After a 20-minute meeting with Schumer on Thursday, he declared the talks at an impasse and instructed senators to return on Jan. 6 ready to vote.
3. Apprise
• Inform or tell someone.
Usage: I thought it right to apprise Chris of what had happened.
4. Forlorn
• Pitifully sad and abandoned or lonely.
Usage: Forlorn figures at bus stops.
5. Edifice
• a) A large, imposing building.
Usage: The architect, Pierre Chareau, conceived the edifice as a series of interlocking forms, with the doctor’s office on the first floor and two private levels above.
• b) A complex system of beliefs.
Usage: The concepts on which the edifice of capitalism was built.
6. Brownie Points
• An imaginary award given to someone who does good deeds or attempts to please.
Usage: His policy will win brownie points with voters.
7. Grope
• Search blindly or uncertainly by feeling with the hands.
Usage: She groped for her spectacles.
8. Perfunctory
• Of an action carried out without real interest, feeling, or effort.
Usage: He gave a perfunctory nod.
9. Remiss
• Lacking care or attention to duty; negligent.
Usage: It would be very remiss of me not to pass on that information.
10. Serrated
• Having or denoting a jagged edge; saw-like.
Usage: When ready to serve, slice the cake with a long serrated knife and garnish with additional lime zest grated on top.
