1. Manmohan Mahapatra passes away

  • Manmohan Mahapatra was an Odia filmmaker, director, producer, and writer.
  • He won eight consecutive national film awards for his films NishitaSwapna, MajhiPahacha, Tired Afternoon, NeerabaJhada, SeetaRaati, and BhinnaSamaya, among others.

2. Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu National Award for Excellence

  • Agricultural Scientist Dr MS Swaminathan was honoured as the first recipients ‘Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu National Award for Excellence’ for his contribution to the field of agriculture.
  • A cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs and a citation.
  • Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan is an Indian geneticist and administrator, known for his role in India’s Green Revolution, a program under which high-yield varieties of wheat and rice were planted.

3. Science Film Festival of India (SCI-FFI 2020)

  • Goa will host the 5th edition of Science Film Festival of India (SCI-FFI 2020).

4. Magh Bihu Festival

  • Magh Bihu is an auspicious harvest festival, is being celebrated in Assam.
  • It marks the end of harvesting season in the month of Magh.(January–February).A bonfire(Meji) is lit for the ceremonial conclusion and prayer to the God of Fire.

International News

1. Biopic on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

  • India and Bangladesh signed an MoU for the co-production of a biopic on ‘Father of Bangladesh’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
  • Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, shortened as Sheikh Mujib or just Mujib, was a Bangladeshi politician and statesman. He is often called the father of Bengali nation. He served as the first President of Bangladesh and later as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 17 April 1971 until his assassination on 15 August 1975.
  • The biopic will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal and will be released in March 2021 as part of centenary celebrations of BangaBandhu.

2. Bureau Member at IUPAC

  • Bipul Behari Saha has been elected as the bureau member of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
  • He has become the 2nd Indian after CNR Rao to hold the position.
  • The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is an international federation of National Adhering Organizations that represents chemists in individual countries. It is a member of the International Science Council.

  • Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev has resigned from the post.

1. Director General of CRPF

  • Anand Prakash Maheshwari has appointed Director General of Central Reserve Police Force.
  • The Central Reserve Police Force is India’s largest Central Armed Police Force. It functions under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India. The CRPF’s primary role lies in assisting the State/Union Territories in police operations to maintain law and order and counter insurgency.

2. South Central Zone Railway with SBI

  • South Central Zone Railway and SBI have signed an MoU for direct pickup of earnings at all the Railway stations over South Central Railway Zone.

3. Surveyor General of India

  • Lt General Girish Kumar has been reappointed as the Surveyor General of India.
  • The Surveyor General of India is the Head of Department of Survey of India, a Department under the Ministry of Science and Technology of Government of India. He also happens to be the senior most member of the Survey of India Service, an organized engineering service under the Union of India.

1. First woman third umpire in a Men’s International Match

  • Jacqueline Williams of West Indies is set to become the first woman third umpire in a Men’s International Match.
  • The West Indies cricket team, nicknamed the Windies, is a multi-national men’s cricket team representing the Anglophone Caribbean region and administered by Cricket West Indies.
