Article Title: With renewables, sun kissed lands like India could boast almost-free power within a generation
Article Summary
In this article, the author talks about the need for India to look towards renewable sources of Energy, especially Solar Energy. With many Indian cities descending into a negative spiral due to air pollution the author thinks it is about time, India looks towards harvesting solar energy to meet its energy requirements. Once unfeasible due to its high cost, time and innovation have bought down the cost of solar equipment and battery technology by so much that they are giving non-renewable energy industry a run for their money. Power usage is growing exponentially the author thinks that solar can potentially provide more power than the world needs in less than 20 years. But, the danger for India is not that it lacks the opportunities to become a renewables world leader, but that it fails to grasp it. Ambitious plans laid out by Narendra Modi are unlikely to be achieved unless India does away with high-tariffs and red tape – to offer subsidies and do whatever else it takes to transform most of its energy generation to solar and wind – by 2025 or sooner. Unlike fossil fuels, these investments will pay-off in the long term. He feels that India should follow the example of those countries who have shown the way in making a switch to renewable energy for a solar-dependent India can have a bright future.
