1. ISRO’s Successful SSLV-D2 Second Developmental Launch

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) celebrated a successful launch of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle’s (SSLV-D2) second developmental flight on February 10, 2023, from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The mission carried three satellites: EOS-07, Janus-1, and AzaadiSAT-2.
  • During its inaugural developmental flight launched from SDSC on February 7, 2022, the SSLV faced a setback.
    • Setback Cause: A minor vibration disturbance affected the equipment bay deck.

2. Record-High Foreign Remittances to India

  • India received an unprecedented influx of USD 89,127 million in foreign inward remittances, marking a new annual record.
  • Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, the Union Minister of State for Finance, confirmed this in a written statement to the Rajya Sabha.
  • For perspective, remittances stood at USD 69,129 million in the 2017-18 fiscal year and have witnessed a steady growth since.
  • Most of these remittances channeled through Authorized Dealer (ADs) banks originated from countries including the United States (23.4%), the UAE (18%), the UK (6.8%), Singapore (5.7%), and Saudi Arabia (5.1%).

3. Appointment of Two Judges to the Supreme Court

  • The government has ratified the appointments of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar to the Supreme Court.
  • This replenishment restores the Supreme Court to its full strength of 34 judges.
  • About the judges: Justice Rajesh Bindal had been serving as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, while Justice Aravind Kumar was the Chief Justice at the Gujarat High Court.
  • Moreover, the government recently inducted five other judges: Justices Pankaj Mithal, Sanjay Karol, PV Sanjay Kumar, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Manoj Misra.
