National & International Appointments

1. Appointment of Amit Kshatriya at NASA

  • NASA has appointed Amit Kshatriya, an Indian-American software and robotics engineer, as the inaugural head of NASA’s Moon to Mars Program.
  • The program aims to advance human exploration efforts on the Moon and Mars to benefit humanity.
  • Amit Kshatriya will oversee the strategy and execution of human missions to these celestial bodies, working under NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

National News

2. Growth in India’s Agricultural Exports

  • India observed a 6.04% rise in its agricultural exports from April to January in the fiscal year 2022-23, with the total amounting to USD 43.37 billion.
  • The figure shows a growth from USD 40.90 billion during the corresponding period the prior year. The preceding fiscal year 2021-22 saw India setting a record with agricultural exports reaching USD 50.21 billion.
  • The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) plays a proactive role in promoting exports of agricultural and processed food products.

3. Rise in India’s Unemployment Rate

  • The unemployment rate in India climbed to 7.8% in March 2023, marking a three-month high as reported by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
  • After peaking at 8.30% in December 2022, the rate had a slight dip to 7.14% in January and increased to 7.45% in February 2023. Urban regions recorded 8.4% unemployment in March, whereas rural areas had 7.5%.
  • Haryana led with the highest unemployment rate of 26.8%, closely followed by Rajasthan at 26.4%, among other states.

International News

4. Finland’s Induction into NATO

  • Finland has joined as the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with Turkey’s unanimous endorsement significantly influencing Finland’s accession.
  • Finland’s decision, which shares a considerable border with Russia, was prompted by security apprehensions stemming from Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Interestingly, Sweden’s NATO membership application was declined by both Turkey and Hungary.

5. 10th Annual Indian-Sri Lanka Maritime Exercise, SLINEX-2023

  • The 10th iteration of the annual Indian-Sri Lanka Bilateral Maritime exercise, SLINEX-2023, is set to be held in Colombo on April 3, 2023.
  • The exercise will occur in two stages: the Harbour Phase and the Sea Phase, each lasting three days. Representing India are INS Kiltan and INS Savitri, while the Sri Lanka Navy will deploy SLNS Vijayabahu and SLNS Samudura.
  • Special Forces from both nations’ navies will also be part of this collaborative exercise.

6. Commemoration of Odisha Day or Utkal Divas

  • Odisha Day, also known as Utkal Divas, is celebrated every April 1st. This occasion is of particular importance to Odisha’s residents as it signifies the state’s establishment on April 1, 1936.
  • In 2023, Odisha marked its 88th foundation day, celebrating its split from the Bengal Presidency. This monumental decision resulted from the local community’s prolonged struggle, which began even before India gained independence from British colonial domination.
