1. ‘Samudra Shakti-23’ Joint Exercise Between India and Indonesia

  • The 4th iteration of the bilateral exercise, Samudra Shakti-23, between India and Indonesia is being held from 14th to 19th May 2023 in Batam, Indonesia.
  • Objective: The exercise aims to enhance mutual cooperation and to bolster joint operations and coordination between the two navies.
  • INS Kavaratti, Indian Navy Dornier Maritime Patrol aircraft, and the Chetak helicopter represent the Indian Naval fleet. The Indonesian side is represented by the KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda, CN 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and the AS565 Panther Helicopter.

2. Launch of NASA’s Second Super Pressure Balloon

  • NASA has launched its massive super pressure balloon (SPB) from Wānaka Airport, New Zealand, marking the second of its kind, which is as large as a football stadium.
  • The inaugural scientific balloon was launched on April 16, following five unsuccessful attempts in the previous year.
  • Airways, New Zealand’s air navigation service provider, collaborates with NASA for the balloon launches. These balloons can expand up to a volume of 532,000 cubic meters during flight, accommodating various scientific instruments.

3. AIIMS Collaborates with WHO and Duke-NUS for Patient Safety

  • The prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS), has entered into a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO-SEARO) to enhance patient welfare and quality assurance.
  • A central committee will be established at AIIMS to oversee the implementation of advanced safety and quality measures for patients.
  • Under this partnership, AIIMS will adopt the educational framework introduced by WHO, which was developed in association with Duke-NUS.

4. Cisco’s Manufacturing Endeavour in Tamil Nadu

  • Tech titan Cisco has announced its plan to commence manufacturing operations in India, aiming to enhance the global supply chain and support India’s vision of becoming a manufacturing giant.
  • Chuck Robbins, Cisco’s CEO, disclosed that their upcoming manufacturing base in Tamil Nadu is expected to provide jobs for around 1,200 people.
  • Cisco aspires to achieve a combined target of $1 billion in local production and exports. Their objective includes centralizing vital manufacturing skills in India, from product testing to logistics and in-house repairs.
  • This significant investment is projected to make advanced technologies accessible to many, propelling India toward a leading digital economy status.

5. Record-setting Agri-exports from India

  • At the 8th virtual meeting of Agriculture Ministers from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries, Narendra Singh Tomar, India’s Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, declared that India’s exports in agriculture and related sectors have breached the four lakh crore rupee mark.
  • He emphasized India’s prominent role in global food security, highlighting its impressive food grain production.
