1. RBI Cancels NBFC Registrations

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has exercised its authority under Section 45IA (6) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, to cancel the registration certificates of three non-banking finance companies (NBFCs). The companies affected are Bharathu Investment & Finance India, Cox & Kings Financial Service, and PSPR Enterprises Private Limited.
  • This decisive action highlights the RBI’s dedication to preserving the integrity and stability of the financial sector. NBFCs are companies registered under the Companies Act, 1956, involved in the business of loans and advances, investments in securities, leasing, hire-purchase, and similar activities, but excluding those primarily engaged in agriculture, industry, or real estate.

2. 52nd New Delhi World Book Fair Inaugurated

  • Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, inaugurated the 52nd edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair at Bharat Mandapam. The theme for this year is ‘Multilingual India: A Living Tradition’, showcasing India’s rich linguistic diversity and its contributions to global literature.
  • Additionally, Shri Pradhan unveiled an app for the National Digital Libraries for All. This initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, aims to democratize access to a broad spectrum of non-academic reading materials for children and adolescents, promoting a nationwide reading culture.

3. Weather Information Network and Data System (WINDS) Portal Launched

  • The Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare introduced the Weather Information Network and Data System (WINDS) Portal in July 2023. This groundbreaking platform aims to provide precise, hyperlocal weather data through over 200,000 ground stations, enhancing weather forecasting and decision-making in agriculture and other climate-dependent sectors.

4. Uttarakhand Implements Uniform Civil Code

  • Uttarakhand has made history as the first state post-independence to enact the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with the passage of the UCC Bill in its Assembly. The legislation, formulated by a committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, seeks to provide a common legal framework for all citizens irrespective of their religion. Key features include equitable property succession, recognition of children from live-in relationships, prohibition of polygamy, mandatory marriage registration, and criminalization of certain forms of divorce, marking a significant advancement towards legal uniformity and equality.

5. Tamil Nadu Launches ‘Smart Card’ for Startups

  • Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, TM Anbarasan, introduced a ‘Smart Card’ initiative to support startups. This program offers startups access to a curated range of products and services at discounted rates, aiding their early-stage development and growth.

6. HPCL to Start Commercial Operations at New Refinery in Rajasthan

  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is set to begin commercial operations at its new refinery in Barmer, Rajasthan, by January 2025. The refinery and petrochemical complex, costing an estimated Rs 73,000 crore, will have the capacity to process 9 million tonnes of crude oil annually. This strategic development is expected to significantly satisfy the increasing fuel demands of northern India, marking an essential milestone in the nation’s energy sector.

7. CDOT and IIT Kharagpur Collaborate on 10Gigabit Optical Network Technologies

  • A partnership has been formed between the Centre for Development of Telematics (CDOT) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IITK), to develop prototypes for 10Gigabit-capable symmetric Passive Optical Network (XGSPON) technologies. Facilitated under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, this collaboration represents a strategic move to boost India’s telecommunications infrastructure.

8. Drass Warriors Win 15th CEC Ice Hockey Cup Championship

  • The Drass Warriors clinched the 15th CEC Ice Hockey Cup Championship in Ladakh, defeating United Chiktan with a notable scoreline. Wasim Bilal was awarded both the Man of the Series and Man of the Match, recognizing his exceptional performance and contribution to the team’s victory in this competitive tournament.

9. World Day of the Sick Observed

  • The World Day of the Sick, instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1992 and observed annually on February 11th, invites the Catholic Church to pray and offer support for the sick and their caregivers.
