PWD Minister G. Sudhakaran revealed that only 606 of the 2,300 bridges could be deemed safe. An estimated 365 bridges needed “emergency replacement”. The main reasons specified for this state of affairs is poor construction, use of low grade construction material, corruption, administrative apathy, lack of upkeep and periodic inspections, and unchecked river sand-mining for the dangerous state of bridges. Out of these bridges 10 are in excellent condition despite being over 100 years old and are in constant use, bearing the vagaries of weather and the wear and tear of heavy traffic.

Adolph Kiefer, a celebrated swimming champion who won gold at the age of 17 ,at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and might well have become one of America’s greatest Olympic champions if World War II had not intervened, died on Friday at his home in Wadsworth, Ill. He was 98. Kiefer was a legendary backstroker, losing just twice in some 2,000 career races. He became the first person to break the one-minute mark in the 100-yard backstroke when he was just 16 years old, clocking a time of 59.8 seconds. He competed at the Olympic Games Berlin 1936 when he was 17, and created a new Olympic record in each round of competition.

The record set by him in the final would stand for 20 years.

Navegaon National Park is a beautiful place, located in the Bhandara (Gondia) district of the state of Maharashtra. It was declared as a National Park in the year of 1975. Total area of the park is 133.88 sq. Km. The park has a unique landscape with a huge lake (11 sq.km) surrounded by hills. The watch towers placed at vantage points along the shore of the lake and elsewhere in the forest allow incredible views of animals at close range. The park has an Aviary, a deer park and 3 gardens. The Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Navegaon is home to almost 60% of the bird species found in entire Maharashtra. Every winter, flocks of beautiful migratory birds visit the lake—a rare treat for the eyes. Jungle safari, staying in a tree top house and riding a sail boat in the lake is the most unique experiences of the Navegaon National Park.

To improve upon the existing health care facilities, the Odisha government is allocating six boat ambulances in four districts where people are facing problems in availing 108 ambulance service. The boat ambulance service will be made available in Koraput, Kendrapara, Kalahandi and Malkangiri districts. An additional 92 Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances will be added to the fleet of 420 ambulances that are now in operation in different parts of the state. Rs 21, 21 crore will be spent towards extending emergency ambulance services in the entire state.
