World Book and Copyright Day celebrated on April 23 2017

  • The World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated on 23 April 2017 which had theme of Quotes Wishes Slogans Greetings and special events were organized to promote reading, publishing and copyright across the world including India.
  • It was mainly focused on motivating the children and people and to inspire the children to explore the books and to generate a sense of learning.

Ahead of local polls in Nepal, Five Madhesi parties unite

  • Five prominent Madhesi parties in Nepal viz Mahantha Thakur‘s Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party, Rajendra Mahato‘s Sadbhawana Party, Sharat Singh Bhandari‘s Rastriya Madhes Samajbadi Party, Mahendra Yadav‘s Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party and Rajkishor Yadav‘s Madhesi Janadhikar Forum- Ganatantrik have united to form a new united party named the Rastriya Janata Party which  is the fifth largest party in Nepal’s Parliament.

First ever coal-free day achieved by Britain

  • April 21, 2017 was Britain’s first ever working day without coal powersince the Industrial Revolution as mentioned by officials of National Grid as All coal-fired power plants went offline from April 20, 2017.
  • Around half of energy came from natural gas, with about a quarter comingfrom nuclear plants on this day and as part of a government plan to phase out the fossil fuel to meet its climate change commitments, Britain’s last coal power station will be forced to close in 2025

After 37 years, Cuba and Morocco re-establish diplomatic ties

  • An agreement to re-establish diplomatic ties has been signed by Cuba and Morocco at the headquarters of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations after a time period of 37 years and the decision to re-establish diplomatic ties has been made couple of weeks after King Mohammed’s private visit to Cuba.

40 Yoga wellness centers to be set up in 40 districts by UP government

  • 40 Yoga wellness centers in 40 districts will be set up by Uttar Pradesh as part of the National AYUSH Mission as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme as the government is working towards ensuring a more geographically balanced promotion of yoga across the country and brings non-south states at par with the southern states.
  • The International Yoga Day (IYD) is celebrated across the world on 21 June and the date 21st June was selected because it is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere which has special significance in many parts of the world.

World Bank reports that India tops global remittances at $62.7 billion in 2016

  • India is world’s largest remittance recipient for the year 2016 as per‘Migration and Development Brief’ released by World Bank and remittance inflows to India amounted to $62.7 billion in 2016 but there has been a drop of 8.9% as compared to $68.9 billion received in 2015.

Date for filing tax declarations under PMGKY extended by Government till May 10

  • Under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY), filing of declarations about tax payment and deposit has been extended up to May 10 for black money holders.
  • Filing of declaration where tax, surcharge and penalty under PMGKY has been paid on or before the 31st March and deposit under the Deposit Scheme has been made on or before April 30 has been extended to May 10, 2017 by The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and deposits can be made in the form of cash or in an account with bank or post office or specified entity, with a tax, surcharge and penalty totaling up to 49.90 per cent.

Arunachal Pradesh inaugurates first digital village

  • Arunachal Pradesh declared Nirjuli village-1in Papum Pare district as the first digital village as it aims to give financial support to the villagers to improve their income level , to improve connectivity to speed up socio-economic development of the masses, cashless transactions even in ‘sabjimandis’ to make payment through mobile and benefit the masses and reduce their dependence on banks.

Govt. guidelines say Paying service charge in restaurants not mandatory

  • According to the Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, It is not mandatory for customers to pay service charges in hotels and restaurant bills and as per the guidelines, the column of service charge in a bill will be left blank to customers to fill up before making the final payment.
