 India and French begin joint naval exercise ‘Varuna’

  • A joint maritime exercise Varuna has begun on 24th April 2017 and will be ended on 30th April 2017 by the Indian Navy with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea and aims at deepening combat coordination between the two navies as The Indian Navy and the French Navy have been conducting naval exercises since 1983 and There has been significant progress in all areas of bilateral cooperation and exchanges including naval exercises between India and France.

Mumbai and Elephanta Island linked by India’s first sea ropeway

  • Mumbai Port Trust announced plans to construct India’s first and longest sea ropeway to connect Mumbai mainland with famous Elephanta Island in Arabain Sea on April 24, 2017.
  • Elephanta Island is accessible only by ferries which take around 60 minutes to cover the distance of 10 km starting from Gateway of India as of now and The8-km long ropeway connecting Elephanta Island with Mumbai will begin from Sewri (Eastern Edge of South Mumbai) and the one-way ride through ropeway will take about 40 minutes.

Aadhaar-like UID number mooted by Centre for cows

  • Central Govt. has submitted an expert panel report in the Supreme Court on April 24, 2017 which suggests tagging of cows with Aadhar-like unique identification (UID) number in order to ensure better protection for them and check smuggling.
  • A bench comprising Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud had the report submitted before them as the Central Govt. is also considering providing shelter homes and discouraging the auctioning of cattle as per the report.
