National News
- Meira Kumar is Opposition’s candidate for president
- Opposition parties on Thursday announced that former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar was their pick for the next president.
- Kumar, a five time MP, was elected unopposed as the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha in 2009. She is the daughter of Dalit leader and former Deputy Prime Minister late Jagjivan Ram.
- Earlier this week, the Bharatiya Janata Party had chosen former Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind to be their candidate for the post.
- New home secretary appointed
- Rajiv Gauba to be home secretary has been appointed as Union home secretary by the appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
- In this top level bureaucratic shuffle, Rajiv Gauba will replace Rajiv Mehrishi who is set to retire in August 2017.
- Gauba is currently posted as secretary in Ministry of Urban Development as Officer on Special Duty and will be replaced by Durga Shanker Mishra.
- Kenneth Juster appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to India
- The Deputy Director of National Economic Council, Kenneth Juster, will be appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to India.
- He would replace the outgoing ambassador, Richard Verma.
- Juster has been a strong advocate of India-U.S. partnership, and was the co-chair of the U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group set up during the George W. Bush presidency.
- GDP growth in FY 19: 7.5%
- According to Fitch Ratings, India’s GDP growth will steadily rise from 7.4% to 7.5% in 2018-19 and to 7.6% in 2019-20.
- GST, increased public spending on infrastructure, and a supportive monetary policy over the last two years would be the main reasons for this growth.
- The Agency also said that world GDP growth is expected to pick up to 3.1% in 2018 from 2.5% in 2016.
- Congress against Amitabh Bachchan for GST
- Few days ago, the central govt had announced that Amitabh Bachchan has been roped in to promote GST, but this did not go down well with Congress
- The opposition, congress feels that Amitabh should refrain from promoting GST
- He should not promote GST in its current form. There is already anger among traders against it,” Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said.

- Romanian PM voted out by own party
- Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu lost his job Wednesday after his own party and its governing partner voted against him in a no-confidence motion.
- The no confidence motion was done by his own party: Social Democratic Party. He lost the motion by 241 votes to 10.
- Wednesday’s vote was the climax of a week of political crisis in Romania where the PM was accused of not carrying out necessary economic reforms in the country.
- Grindeanu had refused to resign, accusing PSD party leader Liviu Dragnea of a power grab
- India’s Population will overtake China’s by 2024
- India’s population could surpass that of China around 2024, two years later than previously estimated, according to a report published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
- India’s population is projected to touch 1.5 billion in 2030.
- India’s population may eventually see a decline in the half century after 2050 to 1.51 billion by 2100 but it will still be the most populous country in the world.
- Russian diplomat appointed to lead UN counter-terror unit
- UN has appointed veteran Russian diplomat Vladimir Voronkov to head a newly established counter-terrorism division.
- He has spent more than 30 years in Russia’s Foreign Service, serving in Vienna as an ambassador to UN organisations since 2011.
- Counter-Terrorism office would oversee the counter-terrorism efforts of 36 UN-funded programmes.
- India to surpass China by 2024

- Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigns under investor pressure
- Uber Technologies Inc Chief Executive Travis Kalanick, resigned on Tuesday under pressure from investors after a string of setbacks.
- Kalanick, 40, has faced increased scrutiny in recent weeks following an investigation into the culture and workplace practices at a company he helped start in 2009 and is now the world’s most highly valued startup.
- Privately held Uber has been valued at $68 billion, shattering the norms for Silicon Valley start-ups and The resignation sent shockwaves through Silicon Valley
- Quikr acquires Babajob
- Quikr India has acquired job listing company Babajob Services in an attempt to strengthen its position in the blue collar jobs segment.
- This 11th acquisition for Quikr and its second in the online jobs marketplace space.
- The combined entity of Babajob and QuikrJobs will become the largest platform for blue collar job seekers.
- Qatar Airways: Best airline in the world
- Consumer aviation website Skytrax, named Qatar Airways as the Best Airline in the World for 2017.
- This is Qatar Airways’ fourth win in the last 10 years after securing the top spot in 2011, 2012, and 2015.
- Two Indian airlines IndiGo and Jet Airways were on the Top 100 list.

- Anil Kumble quit as the coach of Indian Cricket team 2 days after their dismal performance in Champions Trophy Finals.
- The main reason for this has been rifts between him and skipper Virat Kohli

- Indian Shuttler beats world number 1 second time in a week
- Kidambi Srikanth defeated world number one Son Wan-ho for the second time in a week to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open Superseries on Thursday
- World number 11 Srikanth had earlier defeated the South Korean in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open, which he eventually won.
