National News

1. Concurrence on merger of factions of AIADMK, Sasikala to be ousted.

The two AIADMK factions led by TN CM E Palaniswami and O Paneerselvam announced their merger at the party HQ.
OPS will be the convenor while Palaniswami will be the co-convenor.
Interestingly steps will be taken to ouster party’s current legislature leader Sasikala.

2. 53% posts vacant in new central universities, 35% in IITs.

HRD minister Prakash Javadekar informed Parliament that new central universities are functioning with over 53% vacant posts, where as IITs and NITs have 35% and 47% teacher vacancies.
He also mentioned the government’s plan of re-employment inviting industry experts.

3. Delhi may get Aerial defense system that protects US capital.

The Indian government is reportedly considering a proposal to improve aerial defences of the capital by adopting defence system that protects US capital, Washington DC.
This comes after the threat to Delhi from incoming enemy missiles and aircraft is on rise because of their increasing use by terrorist organizations.

4. O Paneerselvam takes oath as Tamil Nadu Deputy CM.

O P Aneerselam took oath as the deputy CM of Tamil Nadu, hours after the merger of rival AIADMK factions was announced.
He was also allotted the Finance Ministry.

International News

1. US, South Korea begin computer simulated drills amid N Korea tensions.

The US and South Korean forces began joint computer-simulated military exercises amid N Korea’s Nuclear and Ballistic missile program.
The joint U.S.-South Korean drills last until Aug. 31 and involve computer simulations designed to prepare for war with a nuclear-capable North Korea.

2. China to start world’s 1st meltdown-proof nuclear plant.

China is going to launch the world’s first nuclear power plant, the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station that is immune to meltdown.
The US and China jointly invested over RS.38,000crore for building the reactor used in the plant.

3. Ukraine removed all 1,320 statues of Lenin.

Ukraine has removed all 1,320 statues of communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin following government drive to rid the country of Soviet-era symbol.
Interestingly, Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by the alias Lenin, was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician, and political theorist.

4.Ten sentenced to death for trying to assassinate Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina.

Ten militants were sentenced to death and nine others jailed for 20 years each by court in Bangladesh for attempting to assassinate Sheikh Hasina in 2000.
The convicts had hatched the plot to kill Hasina in 2000 by planting a high powered explosive device at an open ground at her village home, where she was schedule to address a public rally.

Business News

1. Odisha to restore Sops for Paradip Port.

The Odisha Government, which had withdrawn tax incentives to the 34,555-crore Paradip refinery of IOC, has agreed to restore some of the tax breaks including a 700-crore per annum of interest-free loan.
The breakthrough came after Mr.Pradhan met Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

2. SBI and PNB alone accounts for 40% bad loans.

Country’s largest lender State Bank of India accounts for over 27% of the total amount owed to public sector banks by willful defaulters.
Punjab National Bank (PNB) is next on the list with 1,120 wilful defaulters having outstanding non-performing assets wich accounts for 13%of the total amount owed to public sector banks by willful defaulters.

3. Bank unions to observe strikes against government’s decision of consolidation.

Services at public sector banks may take a hit on Tuesday as all unions under the aegis of UFBU have threatened to go on strike against the government’s proposed consolidation move
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) is an umbrella body of nine unions, including All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW).

Sports News
1. Qatar to build Arabian cap-shaped stadium for FIFA WC.

Qatar will build a stadium shaped like an Arabian skull cap for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Qatar is building at least eight air-conditioned stadiums for the tournament.

2. India beat SL by 9 wickets to take 1-0 series lead.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 9 wickets to take 1-0 lead in the five match ODI series at Dambulla.
While chasing SL’s 216, Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan scored his 111th ODI hundred in 71 balls and Virat Kohli scored his 44th ODI fifty.
