1. Nitasha Biswas crowned first Miss TransQueen of India.
- Nitasha Biswas, a Trans woman from Kolkata crowned the first Miss TransQueen India.
- The competition was held in Gurugram, Haryana. Miss TransQueen India 2017 is the first ever transgender beauty contest of the country.
2. India Germany sign pact to improve Grid Integration of Renewable Energy.
- India and Germany has signed an agreement on technical co-operation under the Indo-German Energy Program-Green Energy Corridors(IGEP-GEC).
- The main objective of this program is to improve the sector framework and conditions for grid integrations on renewable energy.
- Notably, China has by far the world’s biggest wind power sector, accounting for 31% of the global total.
3. Nation is celebrating National sports day in the memory of legend Major Dhyanchand.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, and congratulated all sportspersons and enthusiasts on the occasion of National Sports Day.
- Mr. Modi said India is blessed with immense sporting talent and to harness this potential, a portal was launched by the Sports Ministry.
International News
1. Kenya imposes world’s toughest law against plastic bags.
- Kenya imposed the world’s toughest law against plastic bags in the country to reduce plastic pollution.
- The law punishes Kenyans producing, selling or using plastic bags with a maximum fine Rs.25 lakhs or a four year jail term.
2. N Korea fires missile that flies over Japan.
- Amid tensions between US and N Korea, N Korea has fired missile that flew over US ally Japan before landing about 1,200km ahead of country’s Hokkaido island.
- Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has called the move unprecedented and a grave threat to National Security of Japan.
3. Won’t allow anyone to inspect our military sites: Iran Supreme Leader.
- Referring to the 2015 Nuclear deal, Ayatollah Khamenei Supreme leader of Iran has said that Iran will not allow inspection of its military base.
- The statement comes in response to US’s request to access the sites saying Iran has previously used them for covert nuclear programmes.
Business News
1. Uber to offer insurance to driver-partners in India.
- US-based cab aggregator Uber on Tuesday has said that it will roll out an insurance programme for over 4.5 lakh of its driver—partners in India in partnership with ICICI Lombard General Insurance.
- The programme,will go live from September 1, will be extended for free to driver-partners aged 18-65 years. Uber currently has a similar offerings in Indonesia and Myanmar.
2. Cognizant plans to hire more employees in US.
- Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp., a US based technology company, plans to hire more staff in the U.S. as it expands its delivery locations.
- Further Francisco D’Souza, CEO of Uber said that it does not intend to offer another voluntary separation package.
3. Government may offer 2% discount on GST for digital payments.
- In order to incentivize digital transactions government is planning to offer 2% discount over the applicable GST rate on bills up to Rs.2000.
- The benefit may extended in the form of a discount or cash back.
Sports News
1. ICC seeks security assurance post crowd violence in Pallekele.
- The ICC has sought security assurance from the Sri Lankan board for the remainder of the limited-over series against India after crowd violence in 3rd ODI.
- The match was halted for over 30 minutes when crowd started hurling bottles at the players.
2. Sharapova wins her first match of US Open after 15 months doping suspension.
- Playing in her first Grand Slam game since returning to the sport following a 15-month ban for doping, wild card Maria Sharapova handed a defeat to second seed Simona Halep in the opening round of the US Open.
3. Olympian footballer Ahmed Khan passes away.
- India’s two time Olympic footballer and East Bengal legend Ahmed Khan passed away at the age of 90.
- Khan, who played in the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, was one of the ,most famous legendary quintet of forwards called the “Five Pandavas”.
