1. CBI raids Jayanti Natrajan’s house

  • CBI has booked former Environment Minister Jayanti Natrajan over allegations of criminal conspiracy and corruption.
  • She is accused of alleged anomalies in clearance of 55.79 hectares of land to Electrosteel Casting Limited in Jharkhand.

2. Use clean fuel, or will bulldoze plan: Gadkari

  • Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed carmakers to switch to alternative fuel.
  • He added that the government has a crystal-clear policy to reduce imports and curb pollution.

3. Manipur village 1st in Northeast with 100% computer literacy

  • Manipur’s Nungthang Tampak village has become the 1st in northeast to report 100% computer literacy .
  • The initiative was started by a social enterprise called Mangaal Rural.

4. Goa may ban swimming in seas in dark

  • The Goa Tourism Department has said it is planning to enact a law banning swimming in the sea after sunset and after consumption of alcohol.
  • This comes after 3 people drowned last week.

International News

1. India refuses to condemn Rohingya crisis

  • India dissociated itself from an international declaration that condemned Myanmar over the ongoing violence against Rohingya Muslims.
  • India argued that the forum focussed on discussing Sustainable Development Goals and referring to the violence was inappropriate

2. 60,000 people to try blowing away Hurricane Irma with fans

  • 60,000 residents of Florida have pledged to pint their fans in the direction of Irma to blow it away.
  • Hurricane Irma is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes.

3. UK’s National Health service uses 10% of world’s pagers

  • UK’s National Health Service uses 1.3 lakh pagers amounting to 10% of devices in the world.
  • Critics suggested that smartphone apps are a cheaper alternative to pagers.

4. China to spend Rs.400 cr for Mars simulation base

  • China has unveiled plans to develop a 95,000 sq-km replica of Mars.
  • The simulation base would be used for training astronauts and tourism purposes .
  • The country also plans to launch a Mars probe around 2020.

Business News

1. Casino firm increases its CEO’s salary by 400%

  • Casino operator Las Vegas Sands has increased its CEO Sheldon Adelson’s salary to Rs.32 crore.
  • He can earn a bonus of around Rs.80 crore if the company bets its earnings target before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.

2. Pandey appointed as interim GSTN Chairman

  • UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey is given an additional charge of Interim chairman of the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).
  • GSTN’s first chairman Navin Kumar completed his term on August 29th.

3. Let us grow at 8-10% for 10 yrs before chest-thumping: Rajan

  • Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said India should not boast on being fastest growing economy without achieving strong GDP expansion for 10 years.
  • He added that Indian economy is still small but we feel we’re a big country.

Sports News
1. Harmanpreet Kaur gets job promotion from Railways

  • Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit 171 runs in the recent women’s cricket World Cup, has been promoted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Western Railway.
  • Earlier, she was serving as chief office superintendent of the Western Railway in Mumbai since May 2014.

2. Rafeal Nadal’s move to final of US Open

  • He defeated 24th seeded Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the semi-final.
  • Nadal will face South-African Kevin Anderson on Sunday .
