National News

1. Sridevi named best actress, Irrfan awarded best actor at IIFA held in Bangkok

  • Sridevi won Best Actress for her role in 2017 film MOM, Irrfan Khan won the prize for Best Actor in a leading role for Hindi Medium. ‘Tumhari Sulu’ was named Best Picture. Saket Chaudhary won the best direction award for ‘Hindi Medium’.
  • The Best Music Direction Award went to the trinity of Amaal Mallik, Tanishk Bagchi and Akhil Sachdeva for their work on Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Anupam Kher, who has over 500 films to his credit, was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the ceremony.

2. Haryana makes use of LED bulbs mandatory in govt offices by 15 Aug

  • All halogen, sodium bulbs and tube lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs and tube lights.
  • The use of incandescent lamps and purchase of sodium vapour lamps by government sector, government aided sector, boards and corporations and autonomous bodies have already been banned.

3. Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY) scheme

  • To promote solar energy, the Gujarat government has announced Suryashakti Kisan Yojana (SKY) scheme under which farmers would be encouraged to generate electricity and sell their surplus to power distribution companies.
  • The state government would provide financial assistance to 12,400 farmers out of the state’s total 15 lakh farmers to generate an estimated 175 MW of power.

4. National Seminar on Conservation of Particularly Vulnerable Tribes of Andaman & Nicobar Islands: The Way Forward

  • National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) is organizing a National Seminar on “Conservation of Particularly Vulnerable Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands: The Way Forward” on 27th and 28th June, 2018 at New Delhi.
  • About 44 Ministries/Departments have been invited by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to present their strategies and approach towards PVTGs in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

International News

1. Women in Saudi Arabia have been legally allowed to drive

  • Women in Saudi Arabia have been legally allowed to drive for the first time in the history of one of the most conservative countries.
  • On June 4, Saudi Arabia issued the first driving license to women, as Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud officially announced in September 2017 to allow women to drive. Driving schools for women have been set up in five cities in the kingdom.

2. Recep Tayyip Erdogan re-elected as the Turkish President

  • Recep Tayyip Erdogan had won a 52.54% share of the national vote and re-elected as the Turkish President, extending his 15-year grip on power.
  • Erdogan has won several consecutive elections to become Turkey’s longest-serving leader.

3. RemoveDebris mission

  • The first spacecraft to demonstrate active space debris-removal technologies — such as a harpoon, a net and a drag sail — in orbit has been released from the International Space Station to commence its mission.
  • RemoveDebris is an EU (European Union) research project to develop and fly a low cost in-orbit demonstrator mission that aims to de-risk and verify technologies needed for future ADR (Active Debris Removal) missions.

4. London has been voted the most desirable city

  • London has been voted the most desirable city in the world for overseas workers, according to a survey conducted by the Boston Consulting Group and totaljobs.com.
  • London beat New York, Berlin and Barcelona to take the top spot. Meanwhile, the UK overall has dropped three places in the country rankings, falling from second in 2014 to fifth.

Business News

1. The board of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved $100 million investment in the National Infrastructure and Investment Fund (NIIF).

  • India is hosting the annual meeting of AIIB for the first time in June 2018.India is the second largest shareholder in AIIB after China and is also the largest recipient of funds from the multilateral agency.
  • NIIF was set up in 2015 as an investment vehicle for funding commercially viable greenfield, brownfield and stalled projects in the infrastructure sector. NIIF will invest in areas such as energy, transportation, housing, water, waste management and other infrastructure-related sectors in India.

2. OPEC agrees to increase oil production

  • The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has agreed to increase its daily output to address the problem of rising crude oil prices. The cartel’s output would be increased by about a million barrels a day beginning in July.
  • Countries across the world have been vocal in recent months about the need to bring down rising oil prices that threaten to put the global economy under stress. Emerging markets such as India that have been affected by the rising cost of oil imports, have also been exerting pressure.

3. Government proposes to set up 3000 Van Dhan Kendras involving 30,000 SHGs across the country

  • The Government proposes to set up 3000 Van Dhan Kendras involving 30,000 SHGs across the country under the Van Dhan Scheme of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. In a new game changing initiative, the Prime Minister launched the Van Dhan Scheme of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED on 14th April, 2018 during the celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti
  • Van Dhan Mission is an initiative for targeting livelihood generation for tribals by harnessing non-timber forest produces, the true wealth of forest i.e. Van Dhan with an estimated value: Rs.2 Lakh Cr. per year.

4. Iran bans import of 1,400 items to support domestic products

  • boosting the sales of domestic products amid US sanctions, Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade has banned the import of 1,400 items.
  • Managing Director of Iran’s Commerce Services of Trade Development Organisation, Farhad Noori, said that all the banned items have their similar domestic alternatives, adding that “we expect people to support domestic products”

1. US sprinter Noah Lyles runs fastest 100m of 2018 in 9.88 seconds

  • Noah Lyles ran the fastest 100-metre race of the year to clinch the US national title in Des Moines, Iowa.
  • He clocked 9.88 seconds in the final, after equalling Mike Rodgers’ world-leading time of 2018 of 9.89 seconds in the semi-finals.

2. Deepika Kumari wins gold at World Cup stage event

  • Deepika opened the match with 29 out of a possible 30 points to take a 2-0 lead, before splitting the points with Kroppen in the second.
  • Deepika’s last victory at a World Cup stage event came six years ago, in Antalya back in 2012.

3. India beat Olympic champions Argentina 2-1 in Champions Trophy

  • India picked up their second straight win in the Champions Trophy and a massive coup with 2-1 margin over Olympic champions Argentina.
  • This is India’s second game and second win of the tournament after beating Pakistan on Saturday.
