Article Title: Having a hero comes with risk; it elevates us but also leaves us vulnerable to betrayal

Article Summary

In this article the author talks about role models and what are the risks that come in having one.

The author speaks about her own battles and how she relates to Sonali Bendre as she learns to be comfortable with and love her disease scarred body. She considers Sonali to be her hero as her experience and struggle inspire her. This according to moral psychology is called Elevation – which is what happens when we experience moral beauty. When our heroes inspire us, when they reflect what we value in the world, our heroes make us better people. However there are certain risks that comes with having an hero – that is it leaves us vulnerable to betrayal. MeToo has exposed many such tall figures whose crimes were eclipsed by their status as heroes and by our experiences of elevation – which by now are clear to be a lie. When such things happen, we feel the opposite of elevation i.e disgust. This is why the author says having a hero comes with a risk and requires placing faith outside ourselves. He suggests to have a balanced outlook towards this facet which involves neither foregoing them nor trusting them completely.
