Indian Railways is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways.

  • The first train in India ran on April 16th1853 from Mumbai to Thane. With 400 passengers, this train completed its journey of 34 kms with the help of three engines–Sahib, Sindh and Sultan.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Indian Railway has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai and the mountain railways of India.
