Linear is relating to, or resembling a line; straight: “All parents want their children to make progress in a linear way which is expecting too much of them.”
Lineal , on the other hand, means belonging to or being in the direct line of descent from an ancestor: “She being the lineal successor of the family has been chosen to act as the president of the governing body.”
