Official & Officious

Official has the following meanings:-
1. An individual who administers the rules for a game: “The police official was honoured for his bravery shown during an encounter with the terrorists.”

2. Authoritative or authorized: “The President is the official head of the Indian Union.”
Officious, on the other hand, means meddlesome or getting involved in an activity where one’s help is neither asked for nor wanted: “The manager’s officious ways garnered him wide dislike from his subordinates.”
