1. Hyderabad Int’l Airport south India’s 1st to go 100% LED-lit.

  • The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is set to become south India’s first airport to go 100% LED-lit.
  • The airport has converted the entire taxiway edge lights from halogen lamps to LEDs which are highly efficient as compared to halogen lights.
  • RGIA currently serves more than 15 million passengers per annum with close to 400 daily air traffic movements. It recently commissioned a captive 5MW Solar Power Plant for its use supporting sustainable energy.

2. Paytm appoints Renu Satti as CEO of Paytm Payments Bank

  • Paytm has appointed Renu Satti as the CEO of Paytm Payments Bank. Satti currently is the vice president of business at Paytm.
  • She will replace Shinjini Kumar, a former central banker and senior executive at PwC, who was named as Paytm Payments Bank CEO last year.
  • Paytm Payments Bank Ltd has received the final licence from the RBI and would commence its operations on May 23, 2017.

3. Visakhapatnam railway station rated the cleanest station.

  • In a report released by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu Visakhapatnam railway station in Andhra Pradesh was rated the cleanest station among the 75 busiest stations in the country.
  • According to the report Visakhapatnam railway station is the cleanest followed by Secunderabad, Jammu, Vijayawada and Anand Vihar railway stations while Darbhanga station in Bihar was rated as the dirtiest station.

4. Delhi gets its first ever fully air-conditioned bus stand.

  • A fully air-conditioned bus stand was opened in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar.
  • The project was implemented by the Delhi government in collaboration with Daikin India under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
  • The experimental project aims to provide relief to commuters through the summer.

International News
1. India and Chile expanded PTA comes into effect

  • The expanded Preferential Trade Agreement, between India and Chile will come into effect from May 16.
  • Under this trade agreement, both the countries have offered to lower or eliminate duties on a number of items traded with each other.
  • Chile has offered duty concessions on about 1800 goods including chemicals, textiles while India has offered concessions to Chile on 1031 products.

2. Syria peace talks restart in Geneva.

  • A new round of Syria peace talks aiming to resolve a six year conflict begins in Geneva.
  • The UN’s Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said, the negotiations are focused on four separate baskets: governance, a new constitution, elections and combating terrorism in the war-ravaged country.

3. Ovais Sarmad to join UNFCCC as the Deputy Executive Secretary.

  • U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Ovais Sarmad to join the UNFCCC as the Deputy Executive Secretary.
  • He currently serves as the chief of staff to the DG of International Organization for Migration.

1. Mukesh Ambani tops Forbes Global Game Changers List 2017.

  • Indian business tycoon, Chairman of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, has topped the list of Forbes second annual Global Game Changers.
  • Forbes selected trailblazers at 25 companies based on the ingenuity of their ideas and the ability to bring about change.
  • Reliance Jio alone added over 16.2 million in November taking its total subscriber base to 51.87 million within three months of launching its commercial 4G services.
  • The list also includes Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

2. Disha Microfin gets final nod from RBI.

  • Disha Microfin has received final licence from the Reserve Bank of India to set up a small finance bank.
  • The small finance bank will be called Fincare Small Finance Bank, which is targeting a loan book of Rs. 20,000 crore over the next five years.
  • It will commence operations in July. The bank will continue to focus on the priority sectors and retail segments.

Sports News
1. Anas breaks 400m national record.

  • Sprinter Muhammed Anas broke the 400-metre national record at the Indian Grand Prix in New Delhi to qualify for the upcoming World Championships in London in August.
  • The 22-year old Anas clocked 45.32.
  • The entry standard for the World Championships stands at 45.50 seconds.

2. Mitsuhashi banned for life for match fixing.

  • Japan’s Junn Mitsuhashi has been banned from tennis for life after being found guilty of match-fixing offences.
  • The player was offered 2,000 US Dollars to under perform in a singles match and 600 US Dollars in a doubles match.
