World Red Cross Day: May 8
Every year May 8 is celebrated as World Red Cross day. It is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

National News
1. Delhi Metro hikes fares after 8 yrs.
• The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation board has accepted a recommendation to increase minimum passenger fare from Rs. 8 to Rs. 10 and the maximum fare from Rs. 30 to Rs. 50.
• DMRC has been citing rising operating cost in seeking the fare hike.
• DMRC has suffered a net loss of Rs 708.5 crore in 2015-16.
• There will be now six slabs of Rs. 15, Rs. 20, Rs. 30, Rs. 40 and Rs. 50.

2. Justice CS Karnansentences Chief Justice of India to 5 yrs in jail.
• Calcutta High Court Judge C.S. Karnan has sentenced 8 Supreme Court judges to five years of “rigorous imprisonment” and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,00,000 each under SC/ST Act of 1989 and the amended Act of 2015.
• He said that the eight “shall undergo the sentence concurrently” and “fine amount shall be paid within a period of one week to the National Commission, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Constitutional body.

3.India’s 1st bio refinery plant inaugurated in Pune
• The plant will produce ethanol from variety of biomass.
• The project is situated at Rahu in Pune district.

4.Odisha to introduce boat ambulances.
• Odisha will introduce boat ambulance service in four districts where people face difficulties in getting health service.
• The service will be available in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Kendrapara and Kalahandi.

1. Iran threatens to hit ‘terror safe havens’ in Pakistan.
• Head of the Iranian armed forces warned Islamabad that Tehran would hit bases inside Pakistan if the government does not confront Sunni militants who carry out cross-border attacks.
• Ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants last month.

• Emma Watson won the 1st ever genderless Best Actor award for her role in Beauty and the Beast at the MTV Movie &TV Awards.”Beauty and the Beast” also won movie of the year.

• Her competition for the best actor prize included Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy.
• She is a feminist campaigner and UN Women Global Goodwill.

3. Hinduja brothers top UK’s annual rich list
• The Hinduja brothers have topped the 2017 list of the richest people in the UK with an estimated fortune of £16.2 billion.
• Over 40 Indian origin people have been included in the ‘2017 Sunday Times Rich List’ of the top 1,000 wealthiest in UK.
• Some Famous Hinduja Group companies are Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank, Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd.

1. NestAway buys rival Zenify
• Home rental start up NestAway has acquired Zenify for an undisclosed amount.
• CEO of NestAway – AmarendraSahu.

2. SBI slashes home loan rates
• SBI has slashed home loan rates by 25 basis points to 8.35% for loans up to ₹30 lakh. For loans above ₹30 lakh and up to Rs. 75 lakh, the rate will be 8.5%. The rate is unchanged at 8.6% for loans above ₹75 lakh.
• The new rates will come into effect from Tuesday.
• For women borrowers, the rate will be lower by another 5 bps.
• Chairperson of State Bank of India – Arundhati Bhattacharya.

1. Heena Sidhu wins bronze medal in the Womens 10m Air Pistol.
• Heena Sidhu settled for the bronze medal in the Womens 10m Air Pistol category of the 48th Grand Prix of Liberation Plzen Shooting championships.
• She is the first Indian Pistol shooter to be Ranked World No.1 by ISSF.

2. Sunil Narine Smashes IPL’s Joint-Fastest 50.
• He joined teammate Yusuf Pathan on the fastest Indian Premier League half-century record list.
• Sunil Narine reached the half century mark off 15 deliveries against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
• He smashed six fours and four sixes to achieve fastest fifty.
• Narine plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL and opens the innings.

3. Devender Singh becomes 2nd Indian javelin thrower to qualify for world championship.
• Devender Singh has become the second Indian after Neeraj Chopra to qualify for the world championships to be held in London.
• Devender Singh is a javelin thrower.
