GST Collection in June 2024: Growth Slows to 7.7%
- India’s gross goods and services tax (GST) collection for June 2024 reached Rs 1.74 trillion, a 7.7% year-on-year growth, slower compared to the 12.4% increase in April and 10% in May.
- Despite the slowdown, the cumulative collections for the fiscal year stood at Rs 5.57 trillion.
- The finance ministry expects continued robust collections above Rs 1.6 trillion in the coming months, though detailed tax figures were withheld due to GST regime stability.
Core Sector Growth Slows to 6.3% in May 2024
- In May 2024, India’s core sector industries experienced a slowdown, with growth decelerating to 6.3% from 6.7% in April.
- This was due to varied sectoral performances: coal and electricity saw accelerated growth due to increased demand during a heat wave, while cement and fertilizers contracted.
- Factors such as reduced capex, adequate fertilizer stocks, and lower diesel demand impacted sectoral output. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is expected to show a 4-5% growth for May 2024.
