National & International Appointments
1. Extension of RBI Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra’s Term
- Michael Debabrata Patra, who was set for his three-year term as the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to conclude on January 14, 2023, has been granted a one-year extension. This decision becomes effective from January 15, 2023.
- In his role as the RBI deputy governor, Patra supervises the institution’s monetary policy and is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee. His peers in the committee include M K Jain, M Rajeshwar Rao, and T Rabi Sankar.
2. Vikas Purohit Appointed as Director of Global Business Group for Meta in India
- Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has named Vikas Purohit as the Director of its Global Business Group in India.
- In his new role under the marketing division, he will oversee the strategy and distribution teams. Purohit will continue in his role as the CEO of Tata CLiQ until October 2022.
- With a rich professional history, Purohit has been associated with major companies such as Amazon, Reliance Brands, Aditya Birla Group, and Tommy Hilfiger. He will be reporting to Arun Srinivas, Director and Head of Ads business for Meta in India.

3. Manpreet Monica Singh Becomes the First Sikh-American Woman Judge
- Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh has made history by becoming the first Sikh woman judge in the USA.
- Raised in Houston after her father migrated from India in the early 1970s, Singh, along with her husband and two children, currently resides in Bellaire.
- For the past two decades, Singh has been actively involved as a trial lawyer and participates extensively in numerous human rights groups at state, local, and national levels.

4. Commemoration of World Hindi Day on January 10, 2023
- World Hindi Day is celebrated globally every year on January 10 to promote and raise awareness of the Hindi language.
- The theme for 2023 is “Hindi: From Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence,” marking the occasion when Hindi was first spoken at a UNGA meeting.
- The 12th World Hindi Conference will be organized by the Fijian government in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry from February 15-17, 2023.

5. Gabon’s First Female Prime Minister Appointment
- Rose Christiane Ossouka Raponda, at 59 years old, stands as Gabon’s first female Prime Minister, a historic appointment made by President Ali Bongo.
- She assumed the position of the country’s prime minister in July 2020.
- Her political journey includes roles such as the minister for the budget in 2012 and being elected as the mayor of Libreville, Gabon’s capital, in 2014.
- She will be succeeded by Alain-Claude Bilie by Nze, a former minister, as the new prime minister, replacing Ossouka Raponda.
