1. Nepal’s Third Presidential Election:

  • Veteran leader of the Nepali Congress, Ram Chandra Paudel (78), has been elected as Nepal’s third President.
  • In the presidential race, he emerged victorious against CPN-UML Vice-chair Subash Chandra Nembang, with 33,802 votes to Nembang’s 15,518 votes.
  • The President is selected by an Electoral College comprising members from both the Federal Parliament and the Provincial Assembly.
  • Bidya Devi Bhandari’s term as Nepal’s President ends on March 12.

National News

2. Iconic National Flag in Jammu & Kashmir’s Doda District:

  • In the Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir, the Indian Army hoisted the tallest ‘Iconic National Flag’ on a 100-feet pole, making it the highest in the region.
  • The flag was inaugurated by the Army’s Delta Force Maj Gen Ajay Kumar. Families of fallen soldiers were honored during the event.
  • This flag stands as a tribute to numerous soldiers from the Chenab Region who gave their lives for the nation’s unity.
  • Once notorious for terrorist activities, the Doda district has seen transformation due to the combined efforts of the community, security forces, and the government, ensuring peace and development in the Chenab region.

3. Citi’s New Head for Commercial Banking in India:

  • Bhanu Vohra has been designated by Citi group as the head of the Citi Commercial Bank (CCB) operations in India.
  • He replaces Tushar Vikram, who is now the global chief for healthcare within CCB.
  • Bhanu Vohra will work under both Ashu Khullar, CEO of Citi India, and Rajat Madhok, head of Citi Commercial Bank in the Asia Pacific.

4. Colombian Army Welcomes Women:

  • After a 25-year gap, Colombia has reintroduced military service for women.
  • In February 2023, 1,296 women registered in the Colombian Army.
  • Men aged 18-24 have always had compulsory military service in Colombia, typically allocated to administrative tasks and guarding infrastructure, while trained troops handle significant threats like drug cartels and insurgents.
  • This year, women in the same age group can volunteer for military service, aiming to enhance the representation of women in military positions.

5. NISAR Satellite Transfer to ISRO:

  • NISAR, an earth-monitoring satellite co-created by NASA and ISRO, was delivered to ISRO by the US Air Force.
  • The aircraft, a US Air Force C-17 containing the NISAR, landed in Bengaluru.
  • This collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims for a 2024 launch from Andhra Pradesh, observing the Earth from space using unique radar frequencies (L-band and S-band) to detect detailed changes on Earth’s surface.

6. CISF Establishment Day – 10th March:

  • As a leading armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, CISF’s main responsibility is to provide security to various key national establishments, including airports, ports, power facilities, and other vital infrastructure.
