National News

1. Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme ‘DHRUV’

  • Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme-‘DHRUV’ has been launched from ISRO Headquarters at Bengaluru.
  • Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme is being started to identify and encourage talented children to enrich their skills and knowledge.

2. Dearness Allowance to Central Government Employees

  • Cabinet has approved an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance of 5% to Central Government Employees and Dearness Relief to pensioners with effect from July 1, 2019.
  • It is an increase of 5% over the existing rate of 12% of the basic pay/pension to compensate for price rise.
  • The Dearness Allowance is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to government employees, public sector employees and pensioners in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of an Indian citizen’s basic salary to mitigate the impact of inflation on people.

3. SurakshitMatritvaAashwasan (SUMAN) scheme

  • Government of India has launched SurakshitMatritvaAashwasan (SUMAN) scheme which is aimed at zero preventable maternal and new-born deaths in India.
  • Under this scheme, Pregnant women, mothers up to 6 months after delivery, and all sick new-borns will be able to avail free healthcare benefits.

4. Gagan Enabled Mariner’s Instrument for Navigation and Information (GEMINI) system

  • Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has launched Gagan Enabled Mariner’s Instrument for Navigation and Information (GEMINI) system which is a satellite-based disaster warning device.
  • It will help provide information related to disaster warnings when fishermen move away from the coast beyond 10 to 12 kilometres, Potential Fishing Zones.

5. SARAS AajeevikaMela

  • SARAS AajeevikaMela has started in New Delhi.
  • It is organized by the Ministry of Rural Development under the initiative of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission.
  • It aims to bring the rural women Self Help Groups under one platform to show-case their skills, sell their products and help them build linkages with bulk buyers.

International News

1. Planet with most moons

  • Planet Saturn with a total of 82 moons has overtaken Planet Jupiter with 79 moons as the planet with most moons.
  • Twenty new moons have been found around Saturn.

2. Russian Order of Courage

  • USA Astronaut Nick Hague has received Russian Order of Courage for his actions nearly a year ago when he and a cosmonaut had to abort a mission shortly after take-off.
  • The Order of Courage is a state decoration of the Russian Federation first established on March 2, 1994 by Presidential Decree 442 to recognise selfless acts of courage and valour.

3. World Sight Day

  • World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, is a global event meant to draw attention on blindness and vision impairment. It was originally initiated by the Sight First Campaign of Lions Club International Foundation in 2000.
  • Theme: ‘Vision First’.

4. Nobel Prize in Literature

  • The Nobel Prize in Literature 2019 was awarded to Austrian author Peter Handke.
  • The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018 is awarded to the Polish author Olga Tokarczuk

5. International Day of the Girl Child

  • International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day declared by the United Nations; it is also called the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl. October 11, 2012, was the first Day of the Girl Child.
  • Theme: ‘GirlForce: Unscripted and unstoppable’.

  • The proposed merger of Lakshmi Vilas Bank with home Indiabulls Housing Finance has failed to get approval from RBI.
  • Lakshmi Vilas Bank Limited was founded in 1926 by a group of seven businessmen of Karur under the leadership of Shri V.S.N. Ramalinga Chettiar. Their objective was to cater to the financial needs of people in and around Karur who were occupied in trading businesses, industry and agriculture.

  • RBI has approved for the merger of district co-operative banks in Kerala to form Kerala State Co-operative Bank.

3. Bahrain with Kerala Government

  • Bahrain Economic Development Board has signed an MoU with Kerala Start-up Mission to support technology start-ups in Kerala.

1. First women cricketer to complete 20 years in International cricket

  • Indian Cricketer Mithali Raj has become first women cricketer to complete 20 years in International cricket.

2. Shuttler PV Sindhu

  • Shuttler PV Sindhu was felicitated by Kerala State Government.
  • Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is an Indian professional badminton player. Having made her international debut in 2009, she rose to a career high ranking of no. 2 in April 2017. Over the course of her career, Pusarla has won medals at numerous tournaments on the BWF circuit including a gold at the 2019 World Championships.
