1. ‘Year of next of kin’

  • Indian Army is commemorating Year 2019 as the ‘Year of Next of Kin’.
  • The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largest component of Indian Armed Forces. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army, and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff, who is a four-star general.

2. Microprocessor ‘AJIT’

  • IIT Bombay has developed a microprocessor named ‘AJIT’.
  • It is indigenously conceptualised, designed, developed and manufactured.
  • The project was funded by IIT Bombay, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Mumbai based Powai Labs.

3. India’s first ever Ice Cafe

  • Border Road Organisation has created India’s first ever Ice Cafe in the mountain village of Gaya in Ladakh.

4. Prof Kirpal Singh passes away

  • Prof Kirpal Singh was the first chronicler of Indo-Pak Partition 1947.
  • chronicler is a person who writes accounts of important or historical events.
  • The Partition of India was the division of British India in 1947 which accompanied the creation of two independent dominions, India and Pakistan. The Dominion of India is today the Republic of India and Dominion of Pakistan, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

5. ‘DanteshwariLadake’

  • Chhattisgarh Police have deployed first Anti-Naxal Women’s Commando Unit ‘DanteshwariLadake’.
  • ‘DanteshwariLadake’ means ‘Fighters of Goddess Danteshwari’.

International News

1. President of UN General Assembly

  • Tijjani Mohammad Bande has been appointed as the new President of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • Tijjani Muhammad-Bande is a Nigerian political scientist, administrator and career diplomat. He was the permanent representative of Nigeria to United Nations.
  • He served as the Vice-President of the General Assembly during its 71st session in September 2016.

2. Exercise ‘Varuna-19’

  • Indo-French bilateral naval exercise ‘Varuna-19’ has concluded
  • The Second leg of Exercise Varuna 19.2 will be held in Djibouti.

1. India’s first UPI BahiKhata

  • Bharatpe has launched India’s first UPI BahiKhata for merchants.
  • Unified Payments Interface is an instant real-time payment system developed by National Payments Corporation of India facilitating inter-bank transactions. The interface is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and works by instantly transferring funds between two bank accounts on a mobile platform.

2. World’s Highest-Resolution Image Sensor

  • Samsung Electronics has launched World’s Highest-Resolution Image Sensor with 64 megapixels for smartphones.
  • Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It comprises numerous affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand, and is the largest South Korean chaebol. Samsung was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as a trading company.

3. Reliance’s New Acquisition

  • Reliance Industries has acquired British Toy Retailer Hamleys.
  • Hamleys is now an Indian-owned toy retailer, one of the largest in the world. It is currently owned by the Indian company Reliance Retail.
  • It was founded by William Hamley as “Noahs Ark” in High Holborn, London, in 1760, it moved to its current site on Regent Street in 1881.

4. National Technology Day 2019

  • National Technology Day 2019 is observed on May 11 to mark Technological Advancements of India.
  • Remembrance of the launch of Shakti-I nuclear missile at Pokhran in Rajasthan on May 11, 1998.
  • The Pokhran-II tests were a series of five nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by India at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in May 1998.It was the second instance of nuclear testing conducted by India; the first test, code-named Smiling Buddha, was conducted in May 1974.

Sports News

1. New Indian Football Team Coach

  • All India Football Federation has appointed Igor Stimac as India’s National Team Football Manager.
  • Igor Štimac is a Croatian football coach and former footballer, who played as a centre back. In his playing career he had three spells with Hajduk Split and also played for Cádiz in Spain and for Derby County and West Ham United in England.

2. Desert Storm 2019

  • The 2019 edition of Desert Storm was concluded in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
  • French rider Adrien Metge of TVS Racing has won the 2019 edition of Desert Storm.

3. 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships

  • The 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia from September 7 to September 21, 2019.
  • The AIBA World Boxing Championships and the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships are biennial amateur boxing competitions organised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), which is the sport governing body.
  • India’s Mary Kom is the most successful boxer in women’s boxing having won 6 golds and a silver (From 2001 to 2018).
  • The championships was first held in 1974 Havana, Cuba as a men’s only event and the first women’s championships was held over 25 years later in 2001.
