1. African Union Insights:

  • Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Union (AU) is a pan-African organization comprised of 55 African nations. It was initiated on July 26, 2001, in Durban, South Africa.
  • The main objective of AU is to foster unity, collaboration, economic integration, and sustainable development in Africa.
  • It’s governed by several organs including the Assembly of African leaders, the Executive Council consisting of foreign ministers, and its administrative body, the African Union Commission.

2. Ladakh’s Nyoma to House World’s Tallest Fighter Airfield:

  • In a significant endeavor, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is preparing to construct the world’s highest fighter airfield in Nyoma, Ladakh.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will initiate this project by placing the foundation stone at the Devak Bridge in Jammu on September 12, 2023.
  • Nyoma, situated in southern Ladakh, hosts an Indian Air Force Base and has had an Advanced Landing Ground since 1962. It’s altitude is 4,180 meters or 13,710 feet.

3. 19th Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting Sees Indian Participation:

  • The 19th edition of the Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting took place in Istanbul, Turkey from 5th to 8th September 2023 with participation from the Indian Coast Guard.
  • DG Rakesh Pal, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, led the Indian delegation. The event was attended by 23 member nations and two associate members – ReCAAP and UNODC.
  • Key focus areas of discussion were maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, environmental protection, and combatting illegal sea activities.

4. RBI’s Digital Rupee Pilot Launch in the Horizon:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to launch a pilot for the Central Bank Digital Currency, the Digital Rupee, in October, aimed primarily at interbank transactions in the call money market.
  • Following the RBI Act 1934 amendments via the 2022 Finance Bill, this aligns with the government’s vision for a CBDC.
  • There are two planned versions of the digital rupee: CBDC-Wholesale for select financial entities and CBDC-Retail for wider public and business consumption.
