1. Jio 5G Services Launched in Guwahati

  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially unveiled Jio 5G services in Guwahati, Assam.
  • Besides an existing investment of Rs 9,500 crore, Jio is investing an additional Rs 2,500 crore to develop proper 5G infrastructure in Assam. Notably, 5G-powered genuine services have been initiated at the Maa Kamakhya Temple complex in Guwahati.
  • By the end of 2023, most talukas and towns in Assam are expected to have access to Jio’s 5G services.
  • The event also featured a launch of Smart Healthcare services including teleradiology and linked ambulances.
  • About Assam: Dispur is the capital. Himanta Biswa Sarma serves as the Chief Minister, and Prof. Jagdish Mukhi is the Governor.

2. Sudarsan Pattnaik Crafts World’s Largest Hockey Stick in Odisha

  • Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik sculpted the world’s largest hockey sculpture on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Cuttack, Odisha.
  • The hockey stick, made of 5,000 hockey balls, measured 105 feet in length.
  • The Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 is scheduled to commence on January 13th. Pattnaik was honored with the Padma Shri in 2014 for his exceptional contributions to sand art.
  • About Odisha: Bhubaneswar is the state capital. Naveen Patnaik is the Chief Minister, and Ganeshi Lal serves as the Governor.

3. Japan Tops Henley Passport Index 2023

  • The Henley Passport Index 2023 ranks the Japanese passport as the most powerful, offering visa-free access to 193 countries and territories.
  • Japan retains its top position for the fifth consecutive year. It’s followed by Singapore and South Korea in a tie for second, and then European nations like Germany and Spain.
  • Indian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 59 countries, placing India at the 85th position globally, a two-spot rise from the previous year.
  • India’s ranking is comparable to passports from Mauritius and Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, the US stands amongst the top 22 nations.

4. Successful Test of India’s Prithvi-II Ballistic Missile

  • The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM) Prithvi-II at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.
  • Prithvi-II missile has consistently played a crucial role in India’s nuclear deterrence. Its training launch met all technical and operational parameters with pinpoint precision.

5. Extension of RBI Deputy Governor Michael Patra’s Term

  • The Indian government has extended Michael Debabrata Patra’s tenure as the RBI’s deputy governor for another year. His current three-year term as the bank’s deputy governor and member of the Monetary Policy Committee will conclude on January 14, 2023.
  • About RBI: Established on April 1, 1935, its headquarters is in Mumbai. RBI was nationalized on January 1, 1949.
  • RBI was established based on the Hilton Young Commission. It has had several governors, with Shaktikanta Das currently serving in the role. Other deputy governors include M K Jain, M Rajeshwar Rao, and T Rabi Sankar.

  • Organized by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the primary aim of the Swachhata Pakhwada initiative is to improve road safety.

7. National Youth Day Celebrated on January 12

  • Commemorated in honor of Swami Vivekananda’s birthday, National Youth Day focuses on spreading awareness about people’s rights and promoting their exercise.
  • Theme for 2022: Viksit Yuva-Viksit Bharat.
  • Swami Vivekananda, originally named Narendra Nath Dutta, was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata. He passed away on July 4, 1902.
  • He is credited for introducing the concepts of Vedanta and Yoga to the West and delivered a historic speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893.
