1. Karnataka launches Indira canteen with meals priced at Rs.5, Rs.10.

  • ‘Indira Canteen’, aimed at serving the poor at subsidised rates, was inaugurated in Bengaluru by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
  • The canteen will serve vegetarian meals daily with breakfast priced at RS.5 and lunch and dinner at Rs.10.

2. Swaraj approves all pending Pakistani medical visas.

  • External affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has approved all pending medical visas by the people of Pakistan looking for treatment in India.
  • She also mention that decision was taken to mark the occasion of I-day.

3. Assam, Manipur can now decide on AFSPA.

  • The Union Home Ministry is set to give up its power to impose the ‘disturbed areas’ tag on Assam and Manipur, both ruled by the BJP.
  • The move effectively means it will be the States’ decision to either continue the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) or revoke it.

International News

1. Qatar launches new direct sea route to Pakistan.

  • Amid gulf country’s transportation blockades against Qatar, it has launched a new direct sea route between its Hamad Port and Pakistan’s port of Karachi.
  • The move is intended to increase the trade between the two countries by providing more options to customers, exporters and importers.

2. India-US agrees to cooperate over Indo-Pacific region.

  • India and the US have agreed to enhance peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region by establishing a new two-by-two ministerial dialogue.
  • Notably, India will get its first ever shipment of crude oil from US this month.

3. Melbourne named world’s most livable city for 7th year.

  • Australian city Melbourne has been named the world’s most livable city for the 7th year in a row by The Economist.
  • Damascus ranked the least livable city. The annual survey assesses 140 cities and ranks them according to their stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

4. S Korea to prevent war at all cost: Moon.

  • South Korean President Moon Jae-in has warned the US against carrying out any unilateral military action on North Korea.
  • He said that any military action against Kim Jong Un’s regime requires his nation’s approval and vowed to prevent war on Korean peninsula at all costs.

Business News

1. Gold imports double to USD 13.5bn.

  • India’s gold imports more than doubled to $13.35 billion during the April-July period of the current fiscal.
  • Gold imports, which have a bearing on the country’s current account deficit (CAD), stood at $4.97 billion in April-July 2016-17.

2. New Delhi to host next panel meet of TAPI.

  • India will host the next steering committee meeting of the proposed 1,814 kilometer-long Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.
  • The decision was came during the sixth joint Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting on trade, economic, scientific and technological cooperation.

3. ONGC to double gas output.

  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) said it planned to double gas production to more than 100 million standard cubic meters per day in the next 5-6 years.
  • The government is targeting an increase in the share of gas in the energy basket from 6.5% to 15% in the next few years.

Sports News
1. Cricket in Pakistan to be on track again.

  • The International Cricket Council(ICC) has hired a security company for a three year period in a bid to resume International Cricket in Pakistan.
  • Notably, Sri Lanka, subject to security clearance, are expected to play T20I in Lahore in September.

2. MS Dhoni to set up Cricket academy in Dubai.

  • Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is set to open a cricket academy in the Dubai Pacific Sports Club(PSC) in Dubai.
  • The academy will be called the MS Dhoni Cricket Academy(MSDCA).
