1. AP farmers send cheques for PM Modi’s birthday

  • Farmers in AP’s Rayalaseema have sent 68 paise cheques as a gift to PM Narendra Modi on his 68th birthday .
  • The move came as a part of the protest that demands Centre to pay heed to drought-prone area of Rayalaseema.

2. 73% of Mumbai’s garbage is food waste

  • The Mumbai civic body reported that this 73% is recyclable food, fruit and vegetable waste.
  • If this waste is recycled and treated at the source, the amount of garbage transported to city’s landfills can be reduced by 93%.

3. 112 trees to be translocated for widening Bengaluru road

  • The Bengaluru civic body has decided to translocate the trees in the after math of the residents protesting against cutting.
  • Officials also said that two 10-feet high saplings will be planted for every tree translocated.

4. Flight trials of air-to-air Astra missile successful

  • A total of 7 trials of beyond-visual-range-air-to-air missile Astra were successfully conducted over the Bay of Bengal.
  • The missile has been developed by the DRDO in cooperation with the Indian Air Force.

International News

1. UK police arrest 18-yr old in London train bombing

  • The police have arrested the man in the Tube train bombing at London’s Parsons Green underground station.
  • The bombing is the 4th IS-claimed terror attack in the UK.

2. Global hunger rises for the first time in a decade: UN agencies

  • Global levels have risen, now affecting 11% of the global population.
  • The increase is largely due to the proliferation of violence and climate-related shocks alongside economic slowdown.

3. 100 inmates escape prison during Hurricane Irma

  • 100 prisoners escaped from a prison in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands during the chaos caused by Hurricane Irma.
  • They were captured following an operation by British Virgin Island and Cayman Island police officers.

  1. No further deadline extension for filing GST
  • Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has ruled out any further extension in the deadline for filing GST returns.
  • The GST Council has asked businesses to file GSTR-3B till December.

2. Oracle Chairman’s net worth drops $3.7 billion in a day

  • According to Forbes, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison’s net worth dropped in a day.
  • Oracle’s stock fell about 8% erasing over $14 billion of Oracle’s market capitalisation.

3. Govt asks firms to contribute 7% CSR funds to Swachh Bharat

  • 11 lakh companies have been asked to contribute 7% of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending to ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ campaign.
  • Under Companies Act 2013, certain companies are required to spend minimum 2% of their 3-year average annual net income towards CSR activities.

1. South Africa’s JP Duminy announces retirement from Tests

  • The South African all-rounder announced his retirement from Tests and first-class cricket.
  • He featured in 46 Tests for the national side and played 108 first-class matches over the past 16 years.

2. Athletes preparing for 2020 Olympics to get stipend

  • Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore announced that 152 athletes selected under Target Olympic Podium scheme will get a monthly stipend of Rs.50,000.
  • The allowance will come into effect from 1 September 2017.
