1. PM Modi inaugurates India’s biggest dam

  • SardarSarovar Dam in Gujarat is India’s biggest and world’s second biggest dam.
  • Electricity from the dam will benefit Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • The foundation stone for the project was laid 56 years ago by the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru.

2. Thalassemia patients demand free medicines

  • The newly-launched Thalassemia Patients Advocacy Group demanded free medicines,safe,testedblood,zeroThalassemic births and reservation in government jobs for people suffering from the disease.
  • The group is headed by seven Thalassemia patients.

3. ICICI bank duped of Rs.93 lakh

  • The private bank was duped by 17 persons posing as Labour Ministry employees.
  • The accused persons took loans of the same amount by submitting fake ID cards of the ministry and other documents in 2016.

4. Over 2.5 lakh kg trash removed from Mumbai beaches

  • On the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day, the trash was removed by by citizens and the Coast Guard.
  • It marked the 100th week of the clean-up.
  • International Coastal Cleanup Day is conducted on the third Saturday of September every year.

International News

1. Afghanistan mulls arming 20,000 locals to fight militants

  • Afghanistan is considering plans to train the locals to fight the Taliban and Islamic State militants.
  • This comes after the Afghanistan’s security forces struggle to fight insurgency in the country.

2. Russia, Iraq restore air travel after 13-years

  • An Iraqi airplane left for Moscow from Baghdad for the first time since 2004.
  • Russia suspended flights to Iraq after the 2003 US-led invasion pushed the Arab country into war.

3. Beijing bans winter construction to improve air quality

  • Beijing will suspend construction of public projects in an effort to improve the city’s air quality.
  • The 4-month ban is effective from November in the capital, which averages 10 time pollution levels than recommended by WHO standars.

4. Nepal begins its first attempt to remeasureMt.Everest

  • Nepal has begun this to check if the world’s tallest peak’s height was altered by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the country in 2015.
  • The official height of Mount Everest is 8,848 metres was first recorded by an Indian survey in 1954 .

1.SEBI to hire chief economist

  • Market Regulator SEBI is planning to hire a chief economist for a three-year period with a pay of Rs.55 lpa.
  • It would be the first for SEBI to have a chief economist.

2. Infosys to spend over Rs.5 crore in Vizag

  • Infosys Foundation has signed a Rs.5.92 crore agreement with a NGO to construct water level systems in tribal villages in Visakhapatnam.
  • The water supply systems will help 100 tribal villages and 40,000 beneficiaries.

3. Maruti fined Rs.60,000 for denying to repair car in warranty

  • Maruti argued that the damage was due to negligent driving in a waterlogged area.
  • The court observed that the company had not mentioned in the terms and conditions that the vehicle should not be driven in waterlogged areas.

1. PV Sindhu wins Korea Open

  • Sindhu defeated World Championships gold winner Japan’s NozomiOkuhara to become the first Indian to lift the Korea Open Superseries title.
  • She has now won three international titles this year.

2. MS Dhoni completes 100 fifties in International cricket

  • He reached the milestone in the first ODI against Australia .
  • He is the 14th batsman to accomplish the feat with Sachin Tendulkar leading the list with 164 fifties.
