1. Rajasthan’s Nandini Gupta Wins Femina Miss India World 2023 Title

  • 19-year-old Nandini Gupta from Kota, Rajasthan, bagged the title of Femina Miss India World 2023 during its 59th edition.
  • Delhi’s Shreya Poonja and Thounaojam Strela Luwang from Manipur secured positions as the first and second runners-up, respectively.
  • Gupta is a Business Management graduate.
  • The event took place at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak in Imphal, Manipur.

2. US Tops India’s Trade Partners List for FY23

  • The commerce ministry’s preliminary data highlights that trade between India and the US grew by 7.65% to reach USD 128.55 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23, up from USD 119.5 billion the previous year.
  • The US now stands as India’s primary trade partner for 2022-23.
  • Comparatively, trade with China decreased by roughly 1.5%, settling at USD 113.83 billion.
  • Following China, the UAE (USD 76.16 billion) and Saudi Arabia were other significant trading partners.

International Affairs

3. Syria Transforms into Dominant ‘Narco-State’

  • Syria’s economic stability is now predominantly tied to the production and export of Captagon, labeling it as the leading narco-state.
  • The UNODC (2021) has classified Captagon as an illegal drug. It is a man-made stimulant that combines elements of amphetamine and caffeine.
  • Per the Collins Dictionary, a “narco-state” describes a country where a large part of its economy revolves around the illegal drug trade.

4. IIT Hyderabad Welcomes DRDO’s Industry Academia Centre of Excellence

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) was unveiled at the Indian Institute of Technology in Hyderabad.
  • Dr. Samir V Kamat, the DRDO Chairman, marked the launch at the IIT-Hyderabad campus in Sangareddy, Telangana.
  • The government is pursuing visionary projects that support long-term research essential for the DRDO.
  • Among the 15 CoEs nationally, the DIA CoE at IITH is the most extensive.

5. RBI Greenlights Sekhar Rao as Karnataka Bank’s Interim MD and CEO

  • The Reserve Bank of India endorsed Sekhar Rao’s appointment as the interim Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Karnataka Bank.
  • Rao’s tenure is fixed for three months or until a permanent MD and CEO is selected, whichever comes first.
  • He takes over from Mahabaleshwara M S, whose term concluded.
  • Before this, Rao held the position of the bank’s executive director.

6. Observance of World Hemophilia Day on 17 April

  • World Hemophilia Day is commemorated annually on April 17.
  • Goal: To raise consciousness about hemophilia and related inherited bleeding disorders like the Von Willebrand disease.
  • 2023’s Theme: Access for All: Prevention of Bleeds as the Global Standard of Care
  • The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) designated this day in 1989, marking it in respect of its founder, Frank Schnabel.
