National News

1. Aadi Mahotsav

  • National Tribal Festival ‘Aadi Mahotsav’ has begun in Leh-Ladakh.
  • Theme: ‘A celebration of the spirit of Tribal Craft, Culture and Commerce’.
  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda.

2. New Geographical Indication Tags

  • 1. Tawlhlohpuan of Mizoram (It is a compactly woven, good quality fabric).
  • 2. Mizo Puanchei of Mizoram (It is a colourful Mizo shawl/textile).
  • 3. Tirur betel vine of Kerala
  • A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.
  • Any association of persons, producers, organisation or authority established by or under the law can be a registered proprietor. Their name should be entered in the Register of Geographical Indication as registered proprietor for the Geographical Indication applied for.

3. Committee to review Defence Procurement Procedure

  • Government of India has drafted a 12-member high-level committee to revise and align the procedure of Defence Procurement.
  • The panel will be headed by the Director-General (Acquisitions).
  • Defence Procurement Procedure recognises the need to ensure that procurement is undertaken in a manner that takes India closer to the goal of developing a world-class domestic defence and aerospace industry.

4. Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector (SAMARTH)

  • 16 states out of 18 selected states have signed Memorandum of Understanding with Ministry of Textiles for skilling under SAMARTH Scheme.
  • Around 4 lakh workers as part of Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector.

International News

1. Glacier ‘Okjokull’

  • Iceland has commemorated the loss of first glacier ‘Okjokull’ which was lost due to climate change.
  • Okjökull glacier was a glacier in western Iceland on top of the volcanic mountain Ok. First declared dead by glaciologist Oddur Sigurðsson, anthropologists Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer filmed a documentary about the glacier and proposed to mark its end with a plaque.

2. India-Nepal Joint Commission

  • The 5th meeting of India-Nepal Joint Commission will be held in Kathmandu.
  • Capital: Kathmandu || Currency: Nepalese rupee || Prime minister: KP Sharma Oli || President: Bidhya Devi Bhandari

3. Order of Zayed to PM Modi

  • United Arab Emirates will honour Prime Minister Modi with the ‘Order of Zayed’.
  • The Order of Zayed is the United Arab Emirates’ highest civil decoration.
  • Capital of the UAE: Abu Dhabi || Currency: Dirham.

Business News

1. SBI Cards and Payment Services

  • SBI is planning to dilute stake in its credit card subsidiary, ‘SBI Cards and Payment Services’, through an IPO.
  • SBI currently holds 74% stake in SBI Card.
  • An initial public offering (IPO) refers to the process of offering shares of a private corporation to the public in a new stock issuance. Public share issuance allows a company to raise capital from public investors.

2. Bunker Museum

  • President Kovind has inaugurated underground Bunker Museum at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai.
  • Maharashtra Raj Bhavan was built by the British in the year 1802. Just below the bungalow is the bunker built before World War I. Above the bunker, the British placed huge cannons.
  • The underground bunker is spread over 15 thousand square feet and has 13 rooms. After it was found in 2016, many restoration projects were carried out and now the whole bunker has been converted into a museum.

3. Village Volunteers System

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched Flagship Programme titled ‘Village Volunteers System’.
  • It is aimed at providing government services at doorsteps of people.

Sports News

1. Junior Track Cycling World Championships

  • The Junior Track Cycling World Championships was held in Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Indian Junior Men’s Team has won Gold Medal in Team Sprint event of Junior Track Cycling World Championships.

2. India’s first Junior World Champion

  • Wrestler Deepak Punia has become India’s first junior World Champion.
  • He won Gold Medal at the Junior Worlds defeating Alik Shebzukhov of Russia at Tallinn, Estonia.

3. Naval Tata Hockey Academy

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated Naval Tata Hockey Academy at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.
  • It is named in honour of Naval H. Tata.
  • Naval Hormusji Tata was an adopted son of Sir Ratanji Tata and a noted industrialist of the Tata Group. He is the father of Ratan Tata, Jimmy Tata and Noel Tata.
