1. Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded with Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019 in Dhaka.
  • The Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019 award was introduced in 2015. It has been instituted in memory of former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

2. Hyderabad-Karnataka Region

  • Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa has announced that Hyderabad-Karnataka region has been renamed as ‘Kalyana Karnataka’.
  • A separate secretariat will be established for the development for the same.
  • Hyderabad Karnataka region comprising six north-eastern districts — Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Ballari.

3. Wing Commander Anjali Singh

  • Wing Commander Anjali Singh has become India’s first female military diplomat to be posted in any of the Indian missions abroad.
  • She has joined the Indian Embassy in Russia as the Deputy Air Attache.

4. Air-to-Air Missile Astra

  • Indian Air Force has successfully flight-tested Air-to-Air Missile ‘Astra’ off the coast of Odisha.
  • The missile was launched from Sukhoi Su-30 MKI Combat Aircraft on a trial basis.

5. Documentary ‘MotiBagh’

  • Documentary ‘MotiBagh’ has earned a nomination for Oscars.
  • MotiBagh is a documentary film based on the struggle of a farmer named Vidyadutt in a remote Himalayan village.
  • The film was directed by Nirmal Chander Dandriyal.

International News

1. International Conference on Sustainability Education 2019

  • The first International Conference on Sustainability Education (ICSE) 2019 was held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi.
  • It was jointly organised by Mobius Foundation in partnership with UNESCO New Delhi office.

2. Asia’s first Environment School

  • Asia’s first environment school named World Environment School will be set up in Coorg, Karnataka.
  • It will be operational from 2021 for grade 6 to 12 students.

3. International Ramayan Festival

  • The 5th edition of International Ramayan Festival was organized by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, in New Delhi.
  • 17 countries have participated with their artists and rendered their versions of Ramayan.

4. South Asia’s Tallest Tower

  • Sri Lanka has unveiled South Asia’s tallest tower, a 350-metre-tall 17-storey Lotus Tower, located in Colombo city.
  • It is costing over $100 million, 80% of which has been funded by China under Belt and Road Initiative

5. Civil Servants of Maldives & Bangladesh

  • India has inducted a special training programme for Maldivian and Bangladeshi civil servants at Mussoorie in Uttarakhand.
  • It is being conducted by the National Centre for Good Governance.

1. Bharat Bill Payment System

  • RBI has expanded the scope and coverage of Bharat Bill Payment System to include all categories of billers.
  • It includes billers who raise recurring bills and payments (except prepaid recharges) as eligible participants, on a voluntary basis.
  • Bharat Bill Payment System is an integrated bill payment system in India offering interoperable and accessible bill payment service to customers through a network of agents of registered member as Agent Institutions, enabling multiple payment modes, and providing instant confirmation of payment.

2. National Antimicrobial Resistance Hub

  • India’s first National Antimicrobial Resistance Hub was inaugurated in Kolkata.
  • It was inaugurated by ICMR with USA Consulate of Kolkata and USA Department of Health and Human Services.
  • The Indian Council of Medical Research, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world.

3. ‘Nirvik’ Scheme

  • Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) has launched a new Export Credit Insurance Scheme called NIRVIK ‘NiryatRinVikash Yojana’.
  • Aim: To enhance loan availability to exporters and to ease the lending process.
  • Up to 90% of the principal amount and interest will be covered through insurance.
  • The ECGC Limited is a company wholly owned by the Government of India based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It provides export credit insurance support to Indian exporters and is controlled by the Ministry of Commerce. Government of India had initially set up Export Risks Insurance Corporation in July 1957.

4. International Hrant Dink Award

  • Agnes Kharshiing of Meghalaya has received 11th International Hrant Dink Award.
  • Agnes Kharshiing is a women’s rights activist in Northeast India.
  • She is the President of the Civil Society Women’s Organization. Her outspoken advocacy and leadership of protests for women’s and communities’ rights has been linked to her detainment.

5. Aadhaar verification mandatory for new dealers

  • Goods and Services Tax Network has decided to make Aadhaar authentication mandatory for new dealers from January 2020.
  • The Goods and Service Tax Network (or GSTN) is a non-profit, non-government organization. It will manage the entire IT system of the GST portal, which is the mother database for everything GST.
  • This portal will be used by the government to track every financial transaction, and will provide taxpayers with all services – from registration to filing taxes and maintaining all tax details.

Sports News

1. Asia Pacific Youth Games

  • The 10th Asia Pacific Youth Games for 2019 were held in Vladivostok, Russia.
  • India won a total of 16 Golds, 13 Silvers and 5 Bronzes with a total of 34 Medals.

2. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat

  • Vinesh Phogat has become first Indian wrestler to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 53-kg category.
  • She defeated American wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt in the World Championships.
  • Vinesh Phogat is an Indian wrestler who comes from a successful family of wrestlers with her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, both international wrestlers and Commonwealth Games medalists. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games.
