1. New Appointment in New York’s Highest Court:
- Judge Rowan Wilson, aged 62, has been endorsed by the New York Senate as the inaugural Black chief judge for the Court of Appeals, New York’s premier court.
- This historic appointment was made by Kathy Hochul, the 57th governor of New York.
- Wilson had been serving as an associate judge on the Court of Appeals since 2017.
- His academic background includes an education from Harvard College and a law degree from Harvard Law School, which he acquired in 1984.
Domestic News
2. Namami Gange Programme Receives ₹638 Crore Approval:
- In the 48th session of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) Executive Committee, projects valued around ₹638 crore received the nod.
- A significant portion, amounting to ₹407.39 crore, is allocated to four initiatives for purifying the Hindon River, a Yamuna tributary, in the Shamli district. This is in line with the extensive Hindon Rejuvenation Strategy.
- Given its Priority I polluted status, actions have been endorsed to stop contamination from entering the Krishna River from the Hindon River.
- The sanctioned plans in Shamli involve building a 5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (Nirmal Jal Kendra), a 5 KLD Septage Co-treatment Facility, and Interception & Diversion (I&D) structures in both Babri and Bantikhera communities.
- For the 2025 Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a project for enhancing 7 ghats was also greenlit. This encompasses Dashashmedh Ghat and six others, all of which will be equipped with amenities like bathing areas, change rooms, water points, lighting, kiosks, and more.

- The ‘Namami Gange Programme’ is a holistic conservation campaign, recognized as the central government’s main program in June 2014, with a financial allocation of ₹20,000 crore. It focuses on pollution control and rejuvenation of the Ganga River.

3. Neeli Bendapudi’s US-India Task Force Role:
- Neeli Bendapudi, an academician of Indian descent, has been named one of the co-chairs for an Association of American Universities (AAU) task force. This group is dedicated to fostering research and academic collaborations between higher educational establishments in India and the US.
- The AAU, collaborating with the Biden administration’s US-India tech initiative, formulated this national task force to intensify technological and commercial collaborations between both countries.
- As the University of Louisville’s president, Bendapudi spearheaded several groundbreaking changes across various domains. She also became the university’s first female president.

- UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) now has Warrant Officer Subby Subramaniam.
- Richard Verma is now the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources in the USA.

- NASA’s ‘Moon To Mars’ initiative is headed by Amit Kshatriya.

4. World Liver Day on 19 April:
- Every 19th of April, World Liver Day is commemorated.
- The aim is to heighten awareness about diseases linked to the liver.
- The theme for 2023 is: “Be vigilant, do a regular liver check-up, fatty liver can affect anyone”.
- The liver, second in size only to the brain, holds significant roles in immunity, digestion, and metabolism. It filters out toxins, stores vital minerals and vitamins, produces bile, and performs several other crucial functions.
- Typically, the human liver weighs around 1.5 Kg.
