1. Projection of India’s Per Capita Income Growth

  • A research report from Standard Chartered Bank suggests that India’s per capita income could surge by about 70% by 2030, potentially reaching 4,000 dollars, compared to the current level of 2,450 dollars.
  • This growth is anticipated to elevate India to a middle-income economy with a GDP of 6 trillion dollars, where a significant share of it, around half, would stem from household consumption.
  • India’s per capita GDP has seen incremental growth, moving from 460 dollars in 2001 to 1,413 dollars in 2011 and further to 2,150 dollars in 2021.
  • The expansion of external trade is foreseen as a pivotal factor in driving substantial economic progress, with expectations of doubling external trade to 2.1 trillion dollars by 2030.

2. Inauguration of the 20th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region by Om Birla

  • Om Birla, Speaker of Lok Sabha, has inaugurated the 20th annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region.
  • The conference’s focal point is centered on deliberations about natural calamities and strategies for their management, particularly concerning the northeast region.
  • Emphasis was placed on regional cooperation and enhanced connectivity through the Act East policy, envisaging bolstered regional integration on economic and social fronts in the North East.

3. India’s Tiger Population and Growth Rate

  • According to a report released on Global Tiger Day by Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashwini Kumar, India’s tiger population is approximated at 3,925, with a yearly growth rate of 6.1%.
  • In 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a minimum tiger population of 3,167 based on camera-trapped data.
  • Subsequent analysis, including both camera-trapped and non-camera-trapped areas, indicated an estimated tiger population range of 3,925, with an average of 3,682 tigers, demonstrating a commendable annual growth rate.

4. India and ADB Sign Loan Deal for Urban Services Enhancement

  • India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $200 million loan agreement to provide additional financing in Rajasthan.
  • This project aims to introduce innovative and climate-resilient solutions to expand fundamental urban services, including the rehabilitation of heritage structures.
  • Public-private partnerships in the water and sanitation sector will be piloted to increase private sector involvement.
  • The project has already made progress in laying water supply and sewer pipes and connecting households to water services, and the additional financing will further enhance water supply systems and establish new water treatment plants.

5. Recognition of Ratan Tata with Maharashtra’s ‘Udyog Ratna’ Award

  • The Maharashtra government has chosen veteran industrialist and chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, as the first recipient of the ‘Udyog Ratna’ award, the state’s highest honor for eminent individuals.
  • The award acknowledges Tata’s remarkable contributions to the industrial sector, and it’s introduced as the ‘Udyog Ratna’ award from this year onward.

6. Launch of the Book ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Memories Never Die’

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the book ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: Memories Never Die’ in Rameshwaram.
  • This book is the English translation of the Tamil book ‘Ninaivugalukku Maranamillai’, authored by Dr. Nazema Maraikayar and Dr. Y.S. Rajan.
  • The book offers insights into Dr. Kalam’s journey from Rameswaram to becoming a prominent figure in Indian politics, while also delving into Indian rocketry, technology, innovation, and politics.

7. Appointment of Nisha Biswal as Deputy CEO of US Finance Agency

  • Nisha Desai Biswal, an Indian-American policy expert and businesswoman, has been confirmed by the United States Senate as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
  • Biswal’s extensive experience in US foreign policy, international development, and her role as Senior Vice President at the Chamber of Commerce overseeing the US India Business Council and US Bangladesh Business Council were highlighted.
  • Her tenure as Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs at the US Department of State and her involvement in the US-India strategic partnership were also noted.

8. Election of James Ferguson ‘Jim’ Skea as IPCC Chairman

  • James Ferguson ‘Jim’ Skea, a climate science expert from the United Kingdom, has been elected as the new chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
  • Skea’s victory over his opponent, Thelma Krug of Brazil, with 90 votes against 69, occurred during the 59th Session of the IPCC in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • With a wealth of experience spanning nearly four decades, Skea will oversee the IPCC through its seventh assessment cycle.

9. August 1 – World Wide Web Day

  • World Wide Web Day commemorates the creation of the World Wide Web by British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN in 1989.
  • Berners-Lee’s proposal for a global hypertext system paved the way for the development of the Web, which enables the sharing and access of information over the Internet.
  • The first web server and web browser were created by Berners-Lee in 1990, and on August 6, 1991, the world’s first website went live, explaining the World Wide Web project and how to use it.
