1. ISRO’s PSLV failed for 1st time in 24 years

  • ISRO’S Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV) failed to launch the navigation satellite into orbit.
  • PSLV’s first total failure happened on its very first flight in 1993.
  • Till date, PSLV has launched 257 satellites and two spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan.

2. Govt asks 800 engineering colleges to shut down

  • The colleges have been asked to shut down by 2018 by the All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE).
  • These are ones that have less that 30% admissions in the past 5 years.

3. West Bengal had highest number of cow-related killings in 2017

  • 5 of the 9 cow-related deaths across India this year were recorded in West Bengal..
  • Recently, 2 men were beaten to death in the state over suspicion of being cattle thieves.

4. Illegal Optical Fibre Cables removed in Bengaluru

  • The Bengaluru civic body removed 18 km of unauthorised cables.
  • The cables belonging to firms including Vodafone and Airtel were removed after a pedestrian died by tripping over a low-hanging cable.

International News

1. BSF soldier killed by Pak sniper along LoC

  • An Assistant Sub-Inspector of BSF was killed in Pakistani sniper fire in J&K’s Poonch.
  • The Pak Army had violated ceasefire by firing with sniper weapons at the BSF post along the Line of Control(LoC).

2. US, S Korea to boost missile capabilities

  • US President Trump has agreed with his S Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in to revise a joint treaty capping development of South Korean ballistic missiles.
  • Trump also gave a approval to the purchase of US military hardware by S Korea which seeks to boost missile capabilities amidst nuclear tensions with N Korea.

3. US to notify people hit by travel ban

  • The US will send letters to all those who were denied entry into the country post the first travel ban.
  • Earlier, President Donald Trump had banned entry for people from seven Muslim majority nations.

4. Air Force becomes 1st military branch in UK open to women

  • The Royal Air Force(RAF) has become the first branch of Britain’s military to open every role to female personnel.
  • The decision comes after the Britain lifted the ban on women serving in combat roles last year.

Business News

1. Bitcoin crosses the $5000 milestone for the first time ever

  • Bitcoin’s price surged past the $5000 mark setting a fresh record high.
  • The cryptocurrency has surged over 400% this year.

2. Zara Founder slips from world’s richest

  • Spanish Clothing brand Zara’s co-founder Amancio Ortega who became the world’s richest person was overtaken by Bill Gates in less than a day.
  • It was the 4th time he became the richest person and has been overtaken by Gates within 48 hrs every time.
  • Amancio Ortega is now worth $81.5 billion

3. Nilekani will not draw any salary

  • IT giant Infosys said that the Non-Executive Chairman Nandan Nilekani will not receive any remuneration for his current post.
  • According to Forbes, his net worth is USD 1.73 billion

Sports News
1. Former Mumbai pacer Sharad Rao no more

  • Former Mumbai and Karnataka Ranji Trophy cricketer died following a cardiac arrest.
  • He was a part of the then Bombay Ranji Trophy squad which defeated Delhi’s team in the finals to lift the 1980-81 trophy.

2. Fiji soccer team draws with Indonesia

  • The Vodafone Fiji soccer team played out a nil all draw against Indonesia in an international friendly match in Jakarta.
  • Indonesia is ranked 175th while Fiji is ranked 181st in the FIFA rankings.
