1.PM greets Gujaratis across the world on the beginning of New Year.
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted Gujaratis across the world, on the beginning of New Year. Gujaratis mark the start of a New Year a day after the Diwali.
- “Saal Mubarak to all Gujaratis across the world. May the coming year bring happiness, prosperity and lead to fulfilment of your aspirations.”, the Prime Minister said.
2.Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas conferred with Swachh Bharat Inter-Ministerial award.
- Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) has been awarded with Swachh Bharat Inter-Ministerial Award by Minister of State, Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation Shri S.S. Ahluwalia.
- The award in the inter-Ministerial category was presented to MoPNG on the basis of the activities undertaken in the past three years and was received by Senior Adviser (PNG).
3.India-Russia begins their first tri-service war exercise Indra.
- India and Russia began its first ten-day tri-service military exercise, Indra, that will see participation from all three services –the army, Air Force and Navy.
- Over 400 Indian personnel are taking part in the exercise being organized in Russia.
4.Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigns.
- India’s second-most senior legal officer, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigned citing personal reasons.
- Kumar was appointed as Solicitor General soon after Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014. His second term as Solicitor General was renewed recently.
International News
1. India, Pak, Nigeria, Congo, Ethiopia responsible for 50% newborn deaths: UN
- India is among the five countries — Pakistan, Nigeria, Congo and Ethiopia being the others — responsible for half of all newborn deaths in the world, according to a UN report.
- While India was accountable for 24 per cent of these new-born deaths, Pakistan accounted for 10 per cent, Nigeria 9 per cent, the Democratic Republic of Congo 4 per cent and 3 per cent of the deaths occurred in Ethiopia.
2.Spain set to strip Catalonia of powers over independence bid.
- The crisis over Catalonia’s quest for independence escalated as Spain’s central government prepared the unprecedented step of stripping the wealthy region of some of its self-governing powers after its leader refused to abandon secession.
- In his latest display of brinkmanship, Catalan President Carles Puigdemont sent a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy just minutes before a deadline set by Madrid for him to backtrack on his calls to secede.
3.20th October: World Statistics Day.
- At its 41st Session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20th October as World Statistics Day every year.

1.JSW signs pact with Uttarakhand Government to reconstruct Kedarnath sites.
- Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group entered into a pact with the Uttarakhand government for reconstruction and restoration of some sites in the temple town of Kedarnath.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone to mark the commencement of the reconstruction & restoration projects.

1.HS Prannoy defeats Lee Chang Wei in Denmark Open Badminton.
- H S Prannoy recorded his second successive win over three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei, while Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth also registered contrasting wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open badminton.
- US Open champion Prannoy will next face Korea’s top seed Son Wan Ho
2.Indian Cricket team loses top ODI spot to South Africa.
- The Indian cricket team lost their top One-Day International spot to South Africa in the latest team rankings released by International Cricket Council (ICC).
- The Faf du Plessis-led Proteas returned to top spot with 6,244 points from 52 matches following their 104-run victory over Bangladesh in the second ODI.
