International Affairs
On its official map, China renames six places in Arunachal Pradesh

  • China has announced its official names for six places in Arunachal Pradesh viz. Wo’gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoidengarbo Ri, Mainquka, Bumo La and Namkapub Ri thereby aiming to declare China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh.
  • This comes as a warning to India that China will take necessary measures to defend its territorial sovereignty and interests.

The 14th Edition of United Nations International Day of Vesak 2017 to be hosted by Srilanka

  • Sri Lanka will host the 14th edition of United Nations International Day of Vesak from May 12-14, 2017. The chief guest for UN Vesak Day will be PM Narendra Modi.
  • Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace has been decided as the theme of this edition which will include an International Buddhist Symposium the participation of over 400 delegates from 100 countries.

At an auction in UK, Gandhi stamps sold at 500,000 pounds

  • The auction which was held in United Kingdom featured a set of four rare stamps with the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi which has fetched 5 lakh pounds and the purchaser is a private Australian collector.
  • Only 13 of these 1948 Gandhi 10-rupee Purple Brown and Lake ‘Service’ stamps are in circulation as per authoritative issue records

India Steel 2017 inaugurated by Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh in Mumbai

  • “India Steel 2017”, the 3rd edition of this exhibition-cum-conference on Steel Industry was held at Mumbai Exhibition Center in Mumbai from 19th-21st April, 2017 has been organized by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) along with Union Ministry of Steel.

Accidental insurance cover to all residents extended by Haryana

  • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), one of the most prominent schemes of Modi government has been implemented by the Haryana government and it offers accidental death and disability cover and is applicable for 1 year.
  • Sum insured would be Rs 2 lakh each and Rs 1 lakh in case of Accidental death and lakh in case of total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye and loss of use of one hand or foot due to accident.

 ‘Textiles India 2017 will be inaugurated by PM Modi on June 30

  • A mega event Textiles India which will showcase the country as a global sourcing hub will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar on June 30, 2017.
  • The theme of this event will be India as a global sourcing hub and an investment destination; exploring growth potential of technical textiles; and carving a niche market globally for handcrafted goods and its main objective is to provide a platform to connect and collaborate with global manufacturers, investors and buyers in the textiles sector.

Ceasefire with NSCN-R extended by Centre till 2018

  • The ceasefire with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Reformation (NSCN-R) has been extended by the Indian Govt. for one year till April 27, 2018.
  • NSCN-R formed on April 6, 2015 by Y. Wangtin Naga and P. Tikhak after they were expelled from NSCN-Khaplang is among several other armed groups of Nagaland such as NSCN-Isak Muivah, NSCN-Khaplang, NSCN-Unification and Naga National Council.

USD 250000 to election assistance division of UN contributed by India

  • A second contribution of USD 250000 to the programmes for electoral assistance and capacity building has been done by India.
  • The Cheque was presented by Eenam Gambhir, the first Secretary in India’s Mission to the Unite Nations to Kyoko Shiotani Chief of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General at the UN Department of Political Affairs.

Raj Kapoor Awards presented to Saira Banu and Jackie Shroff

  • Actor Jackie Shroff and Veteran Bollywood actress Saira Banu have been named by Maharashtra State Govt. for Raj Kapoor Special Contribution award and Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement Award and
  • Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Vinod Tawde made this announcement and also renowned Marathi actors, Vikram Gokhale and Arun Nalawade have been named for this year’s V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award and V.Shantaram Special Contribution Award.

Italy’s Mayor Glusi Nicolini wins UNESCO Peace Prize

  • UNESCO awarded Giuseppina (Giusi) Nicolini, the mayor of the Italian island of Lampedusa with the peace prize for her commitment to saving the lives of migrants and refugees and she was also awarded the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize by the UNESCO on 19 April 2017.
