1. Kerala’s Pioneering Water Management Initiative
- Kerala has rolled out an innovative water budget to combat potential water shortages during the summer, becoming the first state to implement such a measure.
- The initial phase will cover 94 gram panchayats and 15 block panchayats.
- Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced the Public Water Budget while also launching the third phase of the Ini Njan Ozhukatte project, which focuses on revitalizing irrigation channels in the Western Ghats.
- The water budget, first proposed in 2019, is formulated based on the state’s water consumption and availability metrics.
- With the restoration of hundreds of water bodies completed, the next phase will employ satellite data to assess the status of water bodies across 230 gram panchayats. The first two phases successfully rejuvenated approximately 7,290 km of irrigation channels.
