2. World Happiness Report 2023: India’s Position
- The recent World Happiness Report released by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network placed India at the 125th rank among a total of 137 nations.
- Maintaining its top position for the sixth year in a row, Finland boasts a score of 7.8, trailed by Denmark and Iceland completing the top three.
- The top ten countries also comprise Israel, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and New Zealand.
- In stark contrast, Afghanistan, now under the Taliban’s governance, stands at the base of the happiness chart. Other nations accompanying Afghanistan near the bottom are Lebanon, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Interestingly, both Russia and Ukraine, currently ensnared in conflict, position above India, at the 70th and 92nd ranks respectively.
- The rankings are derived considering factors such as life expectancy, GDP per capita, societal bonds, corruption perceptions, community philanthropy, and personal freedoms in decision-making.

3. ISRO Gears up for the Young Scientist Programme
- The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is prepping for its annual ‘Yuva Vigyani Karyakram’ (YUVIKA) or Young Scientist Programme, aiming to engage school students.
- ISRO’s mission with this program is to offer a foundational insight into space science, its technology, and subsequent applications, targeting the younger populace.
- Designed to spark enthusiasm among students, the programme endeavors to guide them towards a potential future in STEM research or related professions. Ensuring pan-Indian representation, the programme will feature participants from every state and Union Territory.
- Prospective candidates can register for the programme starting March 20, which will continue up to May 26. Registrations will be accepted on ISRO’s specialized portal.
- YUVIKA was first brought to public attention by the former ISRO head, K Sivan, on January 18, 2019, with its official kick-off on May 17 the same year.
