1. Green Hydrogen Standard Unveiled by India
- India has formally specified what constitutes Green Hydrogen through a new standard. As per the standard, set by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), hydrogen production can only be labeled ‘Green’ if it emits no more than 2 kg of CO2 equivalent per kg of H2, averaged over a year.
- The gas is tasteless, colorless, and highly combustible, and is considered a critical element in moving towards a carbon-neutral future.
2. Inauguration of Bharat New Car Assessment Programme by Nitin Gadkari
- On August 22, 2023, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, initiated the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) in India’s capital, New Delhi.
- Targeting vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes, the program aspires to increase vehicle safety standards and consequently reduce road accidents.
- This initiative is expected to instigate competitive practices among vehicle manufacturers to improve safety features.

3. Onam 2023: A Dive into Kerala’s Celebrated Harvest Festival
- Onam, an integral cultural event in Kerala, took place from August 20 to August 31 this year.
- Spanning ten days, this vibrant festival is celebrated in honor of the legendary King Mahabali.
- Each day, from Atham to Thiruvonam, has its own unique rituals and traditions, deeply embedded in the culture of Kerala.
- The festival also marks the beginning of the Malayalam New Year.
4. Foundation Stone for Major Desalination Plant Laid by Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin
- Aiming to address the chronic water shortage in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin recently initiated the construction of what will become South-East Asia’s most extensive desalination facility.
- The project, led by VA Tech Wabag, is budgeted at Rs 4,400 crore and is designed to produce 400 million liters of potable water per day through seawater reverse osmosis.
5. Neelkanth Mishra Appointed as UIDAI’s Part-Time Chair
- The Central Government has named Neelkanth Mishra as the part-time Chairperson for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
- Known for his expertise in the financial and research sectors, Mishra is the current Chief Economist at Axis Bank.
- He’s also been named alongside two other esteemed professionals, Mausam and Nilesh Shah, as part-time members of UIDAI.
6. $25 Million Granted to India from G20 Pandemic Fund for Animal Health
- The G20 Pandemic Fund has allocated $25 million to India’s Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
- The goal is to strengthen India’s animal healthcare system as part of a comprehensive ‘One Health’ approach for pandemic preparedness.
- The project will be managed jointly by the Asian Development Bank, The World Bank, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

7. Tirupati’s Young Prodigy Wins Silver at International Math Olympiad in Singapore
- Raja Anirudh Sriram, a student from Tirupati in fourth grade, earned a silver medal at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC).
- He was the only representative from Andhra Pradesh among the 23 Indians present.
- Competing with over 2000 students from 32 countries, Raja Anirudh was widely applauded for his achievement, including by the Tirupati District Collector K. Venkataramana Reddy.
