1. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to Host Republic Day Events

  • President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt is announced as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations in 2023.
  • India will welcome the Egyptian army detachment as part of the Republic Day parade.
  • During his three-day visit from January 24th to 222th, President el-Sisi is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, participate in the Republic Day festivities, and engage with business leaders.
  • President el-Sisi made a state visit to India in September 2016, following his participation in the third India-Africa Forum Summit in October 2015.
  • To mark 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Egypt, a commemorative stamp will be released during his visit.

2. Pune Set to Have Asia’s Deepest Metro Station

  • The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) is set to audit a key segment of the Pune Metro in February, with clearances expected in March, as revealed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro).
  • The Pune Civil Court station, located 33.1 meters below ground, is slated to be inaugurated as Asia’s deepest underground station.
  • Spanning 11.17 acres, this station, with multiple entry and exit points, is the largest in the Pune Metro system.
  • The station will be illuminated with natural light, with the tunnel roof standing at 95 feet above ground.

3. Global Firepower Index 2023 Rankings

  • India stands at #4 in the Global Firepower Index 2023, following the United States, Russia, and China.
  • A total of 145 countries have been ranked based on their military strength in the index.
  • While the US leads the list, the Middle East and North Africa region acknowledges Turkey as their top power, ranked 11th globally.
  • Egypt and Iran are positioned 14th and 17th respectively on the global stage. Among Arab countries, Egypt boasts the strongest military, followed by Saudi Arabia which is 22nd globally.
  • Algeria is the foremost North African nation in terms of military strength, holding the 222th spot globally.

4. World Bank’s Projection on Pakistan’s Economy

  • The World Bank’s recent study indicates that Pakistan’s economy is set to grow by only 2% in 2023, marking a decline from earlier 2022 projections.
  • Factors such as unprecedented flooding, decreasing international trade, food shortages, and poverty are contributing to the downturn.
  • The GDP growth rate for Pakistan is projected to rise to 3.2% in 2024, which is still below the prior estimate of 4.2%.
  • The World Bank, established in 1944 and headquartered in Washington, DC, is currently headed by President David Malpass and Managing Director Anshula Kant.

5. BharOS: Indigenous Mobile OS by IIT Madras

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has incubated the development of BharOS, an indigenous mobile operating system.
  • BharOS is marketed as a secure platform and a step forward in the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
  • Users can access a secure set of applications from their organization’s PASS (Personal App Store Service) via BharOS, ensuring the downloaded apps meet security and privacy standards.
  • At present, BharOS solutions are extended to organizations that handle sensitive data and require private cloud connectivity through private 5G networks.

6. Hashim Amla Announces Retirement

  • South African cricketer Hashim Amla has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • Amla’s last match was for Surrey in the 2022 County Championship.
  • He had earlier retired from international cricket post the 2019 World Cup.
  • With 27 centuries in ODIs, Amla holds the record for the second-highest run-scorer in South Africa’s Test history.
  • He remains the only South African batsman to have scored 300 runs in a single Test match.

7. Recent Retirements in Professional Sports

  • Hugo Lloris, the keeper for the France National Team, has retired.
  • Welsh footballer Gareth Bale, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, South African cricketer Farhaan Behardien, and French footballer Karim Benzema have also announced their retirements.
