International News
1. Dubai recruits world’s first robot police officer.

  • Dubai police have officially inducted the world’s first operational robot police officer into the force.
  • This robot is know, the Robocop – is around 5-foot tall and weighs a 100kg. It can not only identify hand gestures from a distance of up to 1.5 metres, but can also detect people’s emotions and facial expressions.
  • The robocop comes with special features, such as its facial recognition software with which it can identify offenders. With this tool, the robocop can also broadcast live video feeds to the police command room.

2. Roger Moore passes away at 89.

  • Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 89.
  • Moore starred as Bond in seven films, including Octopussy and The Man with the Golden Gun.

National News
1. India’s first underwater rail tunnel completed.

  • India’s first underwater tunnel, which was built under the Hooghly river for establishing a metro link in Kolkata, has been completed before the deadline.
  • The entire project is 16.6 km long, out of which 10.8 km runs under the ground. Of this 10.8 km, 502 metres is under the water.
  • The project connects Howrah to the west and Salt lake to the east.
  • The total project cost is around Rs 5,000 crores.

2. India to get first union of IT employees

  • A forum of IT workers is set to get itself formally registered as the first union of techies in the country amid mass layoff.
  • The move has come following reports of “illegal termination” of employees by major IT companies in India.
  • The Forum has about 1,200 online members and 120 active members, with chapters in nine cities, where majority of IT and ITeS firms are located.

3. Travel time to Delhi airport highest among Indian metros.

  • The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is the ‘worst to access by a vehicle’ airport, a study by the School of Planning and Architecture has revealed.
  • The study found that the average speed of cars traveling from the city centre to the airport was 20 kmph in Delhi, the lowest among Indian metro cities.
  • Reaching Delhi airport by car is more difficult and time consuming due to traffic.
  • In India, average car speeds drops down to 15 kmph when vehicles come within a radius of 5-10km from an airport.

4. UP makes Aadhaar mandatory for taking board exams from 2018.

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made Aadhaar compulsory for students appearing for board examinations in 2018.
  • UP Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, which conducts the Uttar Pradesh state board exam has made it compulsory for exam taking students to enter their Aadhaar number while filling the examination form.
  • The Aadhaar will help the basic education department to keep a tab on their attendance as well as their performance.
  • Earlier, the government has made Aadhaar Card mandatory for students from Class 1 to 8 in government schools.

Business News
1. Print line raises funds from Tata and Uday Kotak.

  • Editor Shekhar Gupta’s media venture Printline Media Pvt. Ltd has raised an undisclosed sum from investors including Ratan Tata, Uday Kotak and Nandan Nilekani.
  • The company will use the money to launch its news site The Print.
  • The anchor investors, including Ratan Tata, Nandan Nilekani and Uday Kotak, will hold close to 20% equity in Print line Media.

2. Paytm launches Payments Bank.

  • Paytm has launched its Payments Bank operations in Delhi-NCR, with 4% interest on savings account.
  • Paytm Payments Bank will provide Rupay debit card to its customers at an annual subscription cost of Rs100 plus delivery charges.
  • The bank will provide online fund transfer services such as Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) free of cost.

1. Kilian Jornet sets new Everest record.

  • Spanish mountaineer Kilian Jornet has set a record for the fastest ascent of Mount Everest without fixed ropes or supplementary oxygen.
  • He was able to climb the world’s highest peak in just 26 hours.
  • He climbed Everest without the use of O2 (or) fixed ropes and in one single push in 26 hours

2. Scotland register 1st ever win over Test nation.

  • Scotland defeated Sri Lanka in a 50-over practice match in England to register their first-ever win over a Test-playing nation.
  • Kyle Coetzer and Matthew Cross both scored hundreds as they chased down the target of 287 set by Sri Lankan team in first innings.
  • The last time the teams met, Sri Lanka thrashed Scotland by 148 runs in Hobart during the 2015 World Cup.
