1. Wayanad Becomes the First Region in Asia to Provide Identification Papers to Indigenous People

  • The Wayanad district in Kerala is set to become the first in Asia to provide identification documents to all its indigenous inhabitants.
  • Under the Akshaya Big Campaign for Document Digitization (ABCD), Wayanad district administration has rendered 1,42,563 services to 64,670 tribal beneficiaries. This includes Aadhaar cards, ration cards, birth/death certificates, and health insurance.
  • With the objective of furnishing essential documentation to all Scheduled Tribe populations in Thondarandu Gramme Panchayat, the campaign was initiated in November 2021.

2. Ministry of Tourism Participates in World’s Largest Travel Show

  • The Indian Ministry of Tourism marked its presence at FITUR in Madrid, the leading travel trade show globally.
  • India’s participation at FITUR is seen as a significant step towards hastening the revival of pre-pandemic inbound tourism levels.
  • The Indian Ambassador to Spain, Dinesh K. Patnaik, inaugurated the India Pavilion, a 253-square-meter space backed by the Ministry of Tourism and over 30 other exhibitors.
  • New Delhi is scheduled to host the inaugural Global Tourism Investors Summit from April 10-12, 2023, an event organized by the Ministry of Tourism.

3. Parakram Diwas 2023 Celebrated on January 23

  • On January 23, India commemorated the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with a holiday named Parakram Diwas.
  • 2022 marked the 1223th birthday of Netaji SC Bose.
  • Born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha, Netaji joined the Indian National Congress in 1921. He met with a tragic end on January 18th, 1945, in a plane crash near Tohuku in Japanese Taiwan.

4. AMPHEX 2023 Exercise by Indian Navy in Andhra Pradesh

  • The Indian Navy is set to conduct the ‘AMPHEX 2023’, a colossal biennial tri-services amphibious exercise, from January 17-22, 2023, in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The drill will witness the collaboration of the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and Indian Army.
  • The exercise is prompted by concerns regarding China’s increasing military ventures in the Indian Ocean. It will include intricate actions spanning all domains to showcase and affirm a high level of readiness and synergy.

5. J R Vishnu Prasad Honoured with the 2022 RV Prasad Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement

  • J R Vishnu Prasad was celebrated as “the most distinguished scientist of 2022” at the Indian Achievers Award ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi.
  • Previously, in 2018, Anurag Thakur presented the Indian Achievers Award to R Vishnu Prasad, a scientist with 69 patents, acknowledging him as the most distinguished scientist of that year.

6. Recent Honours

  • Naanera, a Rajasthani film, secured the Golden Kailasha at the 8th Ajanta-Ellora Film Festival.
  • Canara Bank was recognized as the Banker of the Year for Asia in 2022.
  • Tamilnad Mercantile Bank earned the accolade for the Most Efficient Small Bank for 2022.
  • For his work titled “Oranweshananthinte Katha”, writer K Venu will receive the Federal Bank Literary Award in 2023. Additionally, R’Bonney Gabriel from the USA will be crowned Miss Universe during the 71st annual pageant.
  • Thiru Kumar Nadesan was conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award.
  • Dr. Sanduk Ruit from Nepal was bestowed with Bahrain’s highest civilian honor, the ISA Award 2021-22 for Service to Humanity. Famously termed the “God of Sight” for his role in preventing blindness in over 1,20,000 individuals, Dr. Ruit has also been honored with awards such as the Padma Shri, National Order of Merit of Bhutan, Ramon Magsaysay award, and the “Asian Game Changer Award” in 2016. The ISA Award includes a cash prize of US$1 million, a certificate of merit, and a gold medallion.
  • In other recognitions, Harish Damodaran received the Gaja Capital Business Book Prize 2022, Adar Poonawalla clinched the Patangrao Kadam award, Dr. Tapan Saikia was conferred with Assam’s highest civilian award, the “AssamBaibhav”, and Aparna Sen was celebrated with the event’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Furthermore, the Jalna and Nagpur Police from Maharashtra were titled the “Best Police Unit” for 2021.
