1. US FDA Greenlights Pfizer’s Vaccine for Maternal RSV Protection in Infants

  • The United States Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first immunization aimed at preventing Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) associated Lower Respiratory Tract Diseases (LRTD) and severe conditions in infants from birth to six months.
  • Marking a significant development in maternal and infant health, this is the first vaccine authorized specifically for pregnant women, to be administered between the 32nd and 36th weeks of pregnancy via a single muscle injection.
  • RSV often leads to lower respiratory infections like bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants, particularly hazardous during the initial three months after birth.

2. Global Spread of African Swine Fever Hits 49 Countries Since Last Year

  • African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly infectious disease, has been spreading worldwide since its comeback in January 2021, affecting 49 countries as of August 2023.
