National News
1. Himachal Pradesh’s Green Energy Initiative
- Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, announced intentions to make Himachal Pradesh the first Green Energy state by 2025.
- With federal support, the state government is targeting the development of 500 MW of solar projects in 2023–24.
- Land has been identified for a 70 MW capacity, and HPPCL aims to finalize remaining locations for a total of 200 MW.
- He directed HIMURJA to secure a 5% premium for every solar project up to 5 MW and a 10% share for all projects exceeding 5 MW.
National & International Appointments
2. Professor Bharat Bhasker’s Appointment at IIM Ahmedabad
- The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has appointed Professor Bharat Bhasker as its new director for a five-year term starting March 1, 2023.
- Currently, he is a professor of IT&S at IIM Lucknow. The term of the current director, Prof. Errol, will end on January 31st.
- Meanwhile, Professor Arindam Banerjee has been named Director-in-Charge by the Board of Governors, serving from January 1 to 28, 2023.
3. Appointment of IAS Officer Vikram Dev Dutt at DGCA
- The Centre has approved the appointment of IAS officer Vikram Dev Dutt as the new head of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
- Dutt, an IAS officer from the 1993 batch, currently serves as the CEO of Air India Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL).
- He will assume the role after the current DGCA chief retires on February 28.

4. Launch of Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE)
- In 2023, the European Space Agency plans to launch the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) from a spaceport in French Guiana.
- Mission Goal: Study Jupiter’s large icy moons – Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.
- The satellite, transported by Ariane 5, is set to become the first to orbit Ganymede. If launched as planned in April 2023, JUICE will enter Jupiter’s orbit in 2034 and deorbit in 2035.

5. ‘Exercise AMPHEX’ 2023 Conducted by Indian Navy in Andhra Pradesh
- The Indian Navy hosted the biennial six-day ‘Exercise AMPHEX 2023’ near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
- This joint drill, organized in collaboration with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force (IAF), showcased joint military operations, involving Indian Army soldiers, Navy amphibious warships, and IAF aircraft.
- The exercise demonstrated India’s territorial defense capabilities, emphasizing improved communication, cooperation, and joint-force tactics.
- Other recent domestic military drills include Gandiv Vijay, Paschim Lehar, Vayu Shakti, Vijay Prahar, Shatrujeet, Megh Prahar, Chang Thang, Him Vijay, and the BSF’s “Ops Alert” drill along the India-Pakistan border.

6. National Girl Child Day – January 24th, 2023
- India observes National Girl Child Day on January 24th to highlight the challenges faced by young girls in the country.
- Initiated by the Ministry for the Development of Women and Children in 2008, the day seeks to raise awareness of the rights and issues concerning girls.
- The theme for National Girl Child Day 2023 has not been announced by the government yet.
